Obsidian’s case for being one of Xbox’s greatest studios is its range: it can build a survival-crafting game around the scale of a backyard and an RPG around consequential character choices, then make each feel like its own thing. A June 2025 preview of Grounded 2 and The Outer Worlds 2 offered promising examples of that approach. It was a hands-on preview, not a verdict on either finished game—and “one of Xbox’s greatest” remains an editorial judgment, not an objective ranking.
Obsidian’s strength is range, not a single house formula
Obsidian’s portfolio spans distinct genres and tones. Grounded turns survival crafting into a perspective-driven adventure among oversized everyday objects; The Outer Worlds is a role-playing series built around character builds, companions, and decisions in a science-fiction setting. The argument for Obsidian is not that these games play alike. It is that the studio can make different kinds of games while keeping their systems legible and giving players room to shape how they proceed.
MobileSyrup’s June 10, 2025 feature reported that 25 million people had played Grounded. The article did not identify the original source or measurement date for that figure, so it is best read as a number attributed to that report—not as a current player count or a primary-source statistic. MobileSyrup’s preview made the more durable point through its examples: the two sequels pursue different design goals, but both seek to expand player options without losing sight of the experience each game is built to deliver.
How Grounded 2 changes the survival-crafting loop
The June 2025 demo account described the familiar cycle of exploring, gathering materials, and returning to research stations to unlock schematics. Craftable gear and stations add complexity to that loop, while the environmental design makes scale part of the play: ordinary objects and terrain become meaningful landmarks and obstacles when viewed from a tiny character’s perspective.

Insect mounts affect more than traversal
Insect mounts were a marquee feature of the preview, but their significance was not just getting around faster. Chris Parker, Obsidian co-founder and Grounded 2 game director, said mounts prompted the team to rethink the world’s layout: “When you add a feature like that into a game, it changes a little bit of everything about the world that you’re creating.” The design challenge, in other words, was to make the environment work for a new way of moving through it.
The Omni-Tool addresses inventory friction
The preview described an Omni-Tool that combines hammer, axe, shovel, and wrench functions. Parker connected that consolidation to a familiar friction in the first game: carrying many separate tools alongside weapons could make inventory management a burden. “How do we refine this and make it fun and easy to do?” was the question he said the team asked. Combining functions is a practical response to that problem, though the demo alone cannot establish how well the tool works across the full game.

Early access and the story’s opening chapter
Producer Miles Winzeler described a plan to give the early-access launch a self-contained opening chapter, an “Act 1” that would establish the narrative from the start. That was a forward-looking description in a June 2025 preview; it should not be mistaken for confirmation of Grounded 2’s current release status or retail format. The preview supports a discussion of the team’s stated design intentions, not a present-day purchase or launch claim.
The Outer Worlds 2 makes choice a central design goal
The preview demo contrasted combat-oriented and stealth-oriented approaches to the same mission. Its account highlighted build variety, optional stealth systems, companions, faction reactions, and decisions intended to have longer-term effects on the world. These were promising signs of a sequel trying to make different play styles matter, rather than simply offering one preferred route through each encounter.

More room for different builds and approaches
Game director Matt Singh described the design principle as “simple but deep”: “if you’re just looking at it in broad strokes, it’s easy to take in, and you can opt into additional complexity.” That captures a useful ambition for an RPG. A player should be able to understand the broad choices before investing in the details, while those details can reward a more specialized build or approach.
A new colony makes the sequel accessible to newcomers
Creative director Leonard Boyarsky pointed to the game’s different colony as a reason it could offer a fresh entry point. The setting gives the sequel room to introduce its own conflicts and characters rather than requiring newcomers to arrive with the first game’s story in mind. The preview presented it as standalone-feeling, not as a claim that the games have no connection.

The Outer Worlds 2 subsequently launched on October 29, 2025. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, Battle.net, Steam, and PlayStation 5. Obsidian’s official game page confirms the release date and lists Windows, Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Battle.net. Xbox Wire describes an Earth Directorate agent investigating skip-drive rifts in the Arcadia colony, with character, faction, and companion choices shaping the story. These launch details confirm what shipped as a release and where Xbox Wire said it was available; they do not turn the earlier demo impressions into a review of the final game.

The comparison is useful because it shows two different ways to broaden player agency. Grounded 2 was presented as changing how players traverse and manage tools in a survival-crafting loop. The Outer Worlds 2 was presented as accommodating more builds and approaches, with choices that could affect factions and the world. Neither example proves that every system succeeds in play; the first is preview-era reporting, and the second’s demo impressions remain distinct from its later release confirmation.

Why the “greatest” claim is persuasive, but still a judgment
The June 2025 feature makes its case through contrast rather than a studio ranking: Obsidian was working across two genres, and the demos suggested each sequel was extending its own strengths. The evidence is concrete—mounts that reshape a world, a tool intended to reduce inventory friction, and an RPG designed for varied builds and longer-term reactivity—while interviews explain the goals behind those choices.
That is a credible reason to regard Obsidian as one of Xbox’s strongest studios, especially if creative range and player choice are the measures. It is not an objective league table, nor does one preview establish the quality of two finished games. The more careful conclusion is that the studio’s ambitions were visible across very different projects, with The Outer Worlds 2 later confirmed as a released game and Grounded 2’s present status not established by the available reporting.
