Nintendo Switch 2 SSD-to-microSD Express Adapter: What’s Possible Now

A project to connect an M.2 NVMe SSD to the Nintendo Switch 2 is in development, but it is not a working, confirmed storage upgrade today. The project’s current proof-of-concept lacks the console handshake needed for compatibility, and there is no verified price comparison showing that the approach would be cheaper than a supported microSD Express card.

What the adapter project is trying to do

NVNTLabs’ open-source SDEX2M2 project aims to connect an M.2 2230 NVMe SSD through the Switch 2’s microSD Express slot. The project describes the slot as using PCIe Gen 3 x1 and NVMe, which makes an M.2 mapping technically plausible. That is the project’s description of its approach, not a verified successful console test. NVNTLabs’ SDEX2M2 project

The key obstacle is the console handshake. The repository says the existing pin-to-pin proof-of-concept board cannot complete it, and a version with handshake capability is still in progress. A simple physical adapter is therefore not enough to make an SSD usable by the console.

Can you use one with Switch 2 now?

There is no confirmed working adapter or successful Switch 2 game-storage test established by the project documentation. The repository lists a pin-to-pin proof-of-concept and a microSD Express sniffer board, but marks the handshake-capable adapter as in progress. It also warns that a microcontroller or FPGA will be required for the handshake process. Treat this as an experimental project, not a product you can install and rely on today. The project advises using only low-voltage, low-power M.2 2230 NVMe drives and says not to use it in legacy microSD slots. Those cautions do not establish that any particular SSD or adapter setup works with Switch 2.

How this compares with Nintendo’s supported storage

Nintendo’s current guidance is straightforward: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” The company supports compatible cards up to 2TB; cards are sold separately. Older, non-Express microSD cards cannot save or load games on Switch 2, although screenshots and video can be imported. Nintendo’s Switch 2 microSD compatibility FAQ

microSD Express card Yes. Nintendo identifies this as the compatible card type for Switch 2. Up to 2TB, according to Nintendo. Cards are sold separately. No specific price is established here. Use a card that meets the microSD Express standard.
SDEX2M2 SSD adapter project No. The project says its current proof-of-concept lacks Switch 2 compatibility because it cannot complete the handshake. Not established for a working Switch 2 setup. No consumer-ready adapter or verified total cost for an SSD plus adapter is established. Experimental hardware; the project says a microcontroller or FPGA is needed for the handshake and cautions about drive power and voltage.

Nintendo’s FAQ also says game save data remains in system memory rather than being copied or saved to a microSD Express card. The card can store downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured gameplay video. Nintendo Support

Would an SSD adapter make storage cheaper?

That remains unproven. The project documentation does not establish a retail adapter price, confirmed compatibility, or a tested total cost for the adapter and SSD. Without those figures, it is not possible to conclude that an SSD setup would cost less than a compatible microSD Express card. For a supported option today, choose a standards-compliant microSD Express card; the SSD route is a project to watch, not a confirmed bargain.
