The mid-January date turned out to be Nintendo Switch 2’s announcement, not its launch. Nintendo revealed the console on January 16, 2025, initially saying it would arrive that year; the company later set the console’s release for June 5, 2025. The headline’s suggestion that an event might be scheduled for mid-January was speculation, not a confirmed launch-event date.

What was known before Nintendo’s announcement?

On January 14, 2025, TechCrunch reported that Nintendo was expected to announce its next console in the first quarter, before the end of March. That report described an expectation; it did not independently confirm that Nintendo had scheduled a mid-January event. TechCrunch’s January 14 report is useful context for the speculation, not proof of a set date.

What happened on January 16?

Nintendo announced Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, and said additional details would follow. Its release stated: “Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to Nintendo Switch, will be released in 2025.” The date therefore marked the system’s announcement and its initial release window, not the day it went on sale. When did the console launch?

Nintendo specified the release date on April 2, 2025: Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. That is the product-release milestone, distinct from both the January announcement and the later hands-on events. Nintendo’s release-date announcement

Nintendo’s Switch 2 Experience was a separate series of hands-on events ahead of the console’s release. Nintendo’s retrospective says the events began in New York and Paris on April 4, 2025, and took place in 15 cities worldwide. They were not a mid-January launch event. Nintendo’s Experience recap
