No Man’s Sky added fishing with its free Aquarius update (version 5.10), announced by Hello Games on September 4, 2024. The feature lets players cast from shore with a Fishing Rig installed in a Multi-Tool, use bait to influence catches, and explore how planet, time, weather, and water depth affect what they find. Automated Traps and the Exo-Skiff offer alternatives to hands-on angling.
How to fish in No Man’s Sky
- Install the Fishing Rig. Add the Fishing Rig technology to your Multi-Tool.
- Find a body of water. Choose a shoreline or, for deep-water fishing, deploy an Exo-Skiff.
- Choose bait and cast. Specialist bait can influence which fish you encounter; cooked edible items can also be used as bait.
- Pay attention to the conditions. Fish vary with the planet and with time of day, weather, and water depth. Explore different places and conditions to discover more catches.
- Record and use your catch. Discoveries can be recorded in the Wonders catalogue, and Aquarius added seafood recipes for the Nutrient Processor.
Hello Games’ notes describe bait as a way to target fish, but do not establish a universal bait-to-species guarantee or a dependable catch-rate table. Treat fishing as exploration rather than a promise that one recipe will always produce one particular fish. Hello Games’ Aquarius announcement outlines the launch feature and its systems.
Manual fishing, traps, or the Exo-Skiff?

What Aquarius added at launch
Beyond fishing itself, the September 2024 Aquarius update introduced seafood recipes, fish records in the Wonders catalogue, and the Aquarius Expedition with cosmetic rewards. Hello Games described the expedition as running for approximately six weeks at launch; that was its original schedule, not confirmation that its rewards are available now. The update was described as free for existing players, which does not mean the base game is free.

Hello Games said Aquarius included over 160 varieties of fish in its 2024 patch notes. That is the update’s stated fish count, not a guarantee that every variety is available in every location or under every condition. The version 5.10 notes give the official launch details.
Fishing has expanded since the launch
Fishing is no longer limited to the original Aquarius launch package. In Worlds Part II, Hello Games described further additions: more fish, fishing from underwater-base moonpools, fishing missions, and fishing milestones. A September 2026 Cosmos 7.04 patch note refers to a minor fishing-mission text fix. That narrow fix confirms a text adjustment, not a complete account of every current fishing feature or platform’s patch status.

Launch fixes and what they mean
The first post-launch patches show that fishing was adjusted after release, rather than establishing that the same launch issues remain today. Version 5.11, dated September 6, 2024, fixed several fishing issues and adjusted catch rates for certain mission-specific items; version 5.12, dated September 17, addressed additional problems involving the Exo-Skiff, fish behavior, and bait values.
