What happened to the launch preorders?
Nintendo announced U.S. retail preorders would begin April 24, 2025, ahead of the June 5, 2025 launch. That was a launch-period window, not an ongoing queue. The current task is finding a legitimate available listing or waiting for a retailer’s next restock.

Launch demand was intense. In its April 24, 2025 report, the Associated Press described rapid online sellouts, delays, and some cancellations. The report said GameStop planned to cancel bot and duplicate orders to reopen inventory. That is historical reporting about the launch period, not evidence of a policy currently in force.
Where to look for a legitimate listing
- Start at Nintendo’s U.S. Switch 2 product page. Use its retailer-discovery path to find official retail destinations. Nintendo’s offers page also names participating retailers, but offers can be limited by time and supply.
- Check the retailer’s own site or app. Confirm the item is actually available for delivery or pickup, rather than relying on an old search result, social post, or third-party stock alert.
- Verify who is selling it. On a marketplace, distinguish the retailer itself from a third-party seller. Check the seller name on the actual listing and review the retailer’s cancellation and return terms.
- Compare the complete offer. Add shipping and tax, check the delivery or pickup date, and identify everything included in any bundle. Compare that total with Nintendo’s U.S. MSRP as a reference—not as a guarantee that every retailer charges that price.
Nintendo’s U.S. system MSRP is $499.99, effective September 1, 2026, according to its May 7, 2026 price revision announcement. Nintendo’s hardware catalog, accessed October 8, 2026, also lists the console at $499.99. Retailers may set different prices, and catalog prices can change; confirm the live listing before buying.

How to prepare for a restock without relying on bots
Preparation can make checkout less cumbersome, but it cannot guarantee a console or defeat automated buyers. For a future restock or preorder, have the following ready:
- A working account with the retailer you intend to use, with your shipping and payment information checked.
- Your preferred pickup location and a backup delivery or pickup option, if available.
- Notifications from Nintendo and retailers you trust, along with the retailer’s own app or website saved for quick access.
- A clear maximum total price, including tax and shipping, and a decision about whether a bundle’s extras are worth paying for.
Act on a confirmed retailer listing rather than an unverified claim that stock is available. Avoid automation that violates retailer terms; it can put an order or account at risk and does not make inventory more dependable.

If the listing sells out
- Recheck official retailer channels for a restock or newly available pickup slot.
- Wait for another legitimate listing if the only remaining option is a reseller asking substantially more than the retail price.
- Before using a marketplace listing, verify seller identity, delivery timing, cancellation and refund terms, and the delivered total. A low headline price does not establish a safe or good-value purchase.
Nintendo announced a May 27, 2025 cooperation with Mercari, LY Corporation, and Rakuten Group to prevent improper listings of Nintendo-related products, including Switch 2. The initiative concerns those marketplace services in Japan; it is not a worldwide resale ban or a guarantee that listings on other platforms will be removed.

Preorder payment rules depend on what is being ordered and where. Nintendo Support’s “Pre-Orders and Pre-Purchases” guidance distinguishes eligible digital eShop software preorders from physical-item purchases through Nintendo Store: eligible digital preorder payment is processed no earlier than seven days before release, while physical-item pre-purchases through Nintendo Store are charged immediately and ship one to three business days after release. Those terms concern Nintendo’s stated software and store purchase flows; they should not be assumed to describe a hardware order placed with a retail partner.

Check bundle contents, not just the headline price
Nintendo’s current retail offers page lists specific bundles and participating retailers, with offers subject to timing and supply. Read the included-items list and compare the bundle’s delivered total with the console price and the cost of only the extras you actually want. Nintendo’s hardware catalog, accessed October 8, 2026, lists the Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector at a U.S. MSRP of $39.99; that catalog price is a dated snapshot, not a promise of a current retail price.
