On August 1, 2012, GamesBeat reported on a Reddit Ask Me Anything with Markus “Notch” Persson, the creator of Minecraft. The selected exchange ranged from the game’s direction and modding to Java and, briefly, the gender of his beard. It was a report on a much larger thread, not a newly conducted interview or a complete transcript.
What was the Reddit Q&A?
Persson answered questions about Minecraft and game development in a Reddit AMA. GamesBeat published selected questions and answers on August 1, 2012, saying it had edited them for clarity and that many more exchanges remained in the original thread. GamesBeat reported 4,468 comments at the time; that is a dated snapshot, not a current count. GamesBeat’s report links to the Reddit discussion.
PCGamesN’s August 1, 2012 coverage also highlighted Persson’s remarks about Minecraft’s updates and the possibility of more competitive gameplay.
What did Notch think about Minecraft mods?
Persson said his view of mods had changed. He recalled once feeling threatened by them because they challenged his vision for the game, but said he was glad the team had allowed modding. As GamesBeat reproduced his answer: “Mods are a huge reason of what Minecraft is.”

That is Persson’s reflection in the 2012 Q&A, not a statement of current development policy. It captures a striking reversal: what had seemed like a challenge to his creative direction came to look like a major part of the game’s identity.
Why did he use Java for Minecraft?
Persson said he chose Java because it was familiar. In GamesBeat’s reproduction of the answer, he said: “I had been working primarily in Actionscript 3 and Java for five years when I started work on Minecraft and chose the language I felt most comfortable with.” He also singled out hot code swapping in debug mode as useful for rapidly tweaking the game.
He acknowledged the trade-offs: Java was not the fastest language, and Minecraft needed ports to reach other platforms. These were his explanations in 2012, not current advice about which language developers should choose.
Was Minecraft still in line with Notch’s vision?
Asked about the game’s direction, Persson said: “Other than a few minor things, they’re exactly in line with my vision.” He praised work on adventure mode and the separation of client and server, and said he hoped future development would support more competitive gameplay. PCGamesN’s contemporaneous coverage also quoted his view that updates were generally aligned with his vision.

Was Notch bored with Minecraft or eager to return?
In the reported exchange about his continued involvement, Persson said he wanted to move on to other things and did not feel an urge to return to coding Minecraft. He also said he had missed it shortly after leaving. Both remarks belong to the 2012 conversation; they do not establish what he is doing or feeling now.

A reader asked what Persson called his beard, and he answered, “Steve?” Asked what gender it was, he replied, “Extremely male.” It was a brief comic exchange in the Q&A, not a serious biographical claim.
