What did Notch mean by “I basically announced Minecraft 2”?
On January 1, 2025, Notch described his work in progress as a traditional roguelike mixed with a tile-based, first-person dungeon crawler. He then asked followers whether they would rather see that project continue or have him pursue a Minecraft-like spiritual successor. The “Minecraft 2” line was his informal description of raising that possibility—not confirmation that a sequel to the Minecraft franchise had been announced.

Was this an official Minecraft sequel?
No. Notch said an official Minecraft sequel would be Microsoft’s decision. A game made by Notch that took inspiration from Minecraft would instead be a spiritual successor: a separate project drawing on a similar idea, not an authorized continuation of the franchise.

Follow-up reporting said the team chose Levers and Chests, rather than the Minecraft-like direction. GameSpot also quoted Notch saying the spiritual successor would be less appealing to him than the dungeon roguelike. The reports establish the decision as described in January 2025; they do not establish a release date, a completed game, or a later verified development milestone.
