No: Markus “Notch” Persson’s January 3, 2025 post described a possible unofficial spiritual successor to Minecraft, not an announced sequel from Microsoft or Mojang. He later said he would focus on his roguelike project, Levers and Chests, and that an official Minecraft 2 was a question for Microsoft.
What did Notch say about Minecraft 2?
On January 3, 2025, Persson wrote, “I basically announced minecraft 2,” while discussing whether to make a spiritual successor to Minecraft. GameSpot quoted the post and reported that Persson was willing to give the idea an honest shot. The phrase was his informal description of a possible project—not the title of an announced game or confirmation that a sequel was in development. GameSpot’s report

What was the poll about?
Persson’s poll asked followers to choose between continuing a dungeon-crawler project and pursuing a Minecraft-like spiritual successor. PC Gamer reported that the successor option had 78% of the vote to 22% for the dungeon-crawler direction in a snapshot taken with four days remaining. That was a poll snapshot, not a final tally. What happened to the spiritual successor idea?
By January 7, GameSpot reported that Persson had changed course. He said the successor would be less fun to make than the dungeon roguelike and that his team would proceed with Levers and Chests. The project had been described as a traditional roguelike mixed with a tile-based, first-person dungeon crawler. In other words, the initial post did not turn into a confirmed Minecraft-like game plan; his reported priority returned to the separate roguelike project. GameSpot’s report

Is an official Minecraft 2 coming?
Persson did not announce an official sequel on behalf of Minecraft’s owners. When asked about an official Minecraft 2, he replied, “You’ll have to ask Microsoft about that one,” as quoted by GameSpot. His remarks establish only what he was considering for his own project; they do not establish that Microsoft or Mojang has announced a sequel, or that a release plan exists. GameSpot’s report
