Northgard earned favorable reviews for its deliberate strategy, resource management, distinct clans, and winter survival pressures. Its main critical caveat is the campaign’s story. For buyers today, one other detail matters: the current Steam listing calls the game Northgard: Definitive Edition, and edition contents can depend on platform.
What critics think of Northgard
Critics generally responded well to Northgard. In a review published 19 March 2018, Fraser Brown of PC Gamer scored the Windows PC version 84/100. Brown praised its careful pace, worker placement, preparation, clan differences, and skirmish mode. He described the campaign missions as varied and useful for introducing mechanics, but found the revenge story and dialogue uninteresting.
Brown summed up the contrast this way: “Northgard is a surprising, elegant RTS that’s laden with a very dull story.” His review’s praise for skirmishes centered on their generated maps: “Every game is fat with potential, helped in great part by a map generator that spits out a brilliant array of as-good-as-bespoke battlefields.” These are Brown’s assessments, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy the same aspects equally.
Metacritic’s PC critic page showed an 81 Metascore, labelled Generally Favorable, with 15 critic reviews when accessed in 2026: 12 positive, two mixed, and none negative. That aggregate is a changing snapshot, not a permanent score. Its review excerpts point to replay value, campaign quality, and accessibility; one also suggests genre veterans may take more readily to the blend than newcomers.

What kind of strategy game is it?
Northgard is a Norse-mythology RTS about Viking clans contesting a newly discovered continent. Its central loop is less about nonstop army production than about growing a settlement, assigning workers, managing resources, and expanding into useful territory while preparing for seasonal danger. Exploration, conquest and other victory pursuits, hostile creatures, and harsh winters all shape a match, according to the official Northgard game page.
Workers, resources, and expansion
As Brown explains in his review, players assign specialists to different jobs and expand into map regions that provide resources. Each new region costs more food to colonize, making expansion a decision about future capacity as well as immediate gain. The game’s measured pace gives those choices room to matter: spreading too quickly can leave a settlement short of the supplies it needs.

Winter changes the plan
Winter is a recurring survival test, not just a change in scenery. Brown describes shifting workers toward food production and using lore upgrades and preparation to improve a clan’s ability to endure the cold. Seasonal pressure can therefore affect both economic staffing and the timing of military plans.
Clans and the campaign
The official page describes the original Rig’s Saga story campaign as 11 chapters and says it introduces the first six clans. Brown praised the clans’ distinct play styles and found the missions useful for learning the mechanics. His principal reservation was the story and dialogue, so players looking for compelling narrative writing should weigh that criticism separately from the strategic systems.

Is Northgard a good fit for you?
Northgard is a stronger match for players who enjoy measured economic decisions, adapting to survival pressure, and replaying maps with different clan approaches than for those seeking rapid, large-scale battles or a story-led campaign. Brown specifically praised the generated maps in skirmish mode; the current Steam listing also identifies single-player, online PvP, and online co-op.
- Consider it if: you like worker assignment, deliberate expansion, resource trade-offs, and planning around seasonal constraints.
- Skirmish-oriented players: Brown’s review highlights generated maps and replay potential as strengths.
- Story-first players: the campaign teaches mechanics and has varied missions, but Brown found its revenge plot and dialogue weak.
- RTS newcomers: the systems are built around settlement management and survival as well as conflict; Metacritic’s review excerpts include a caveat that genre veterans may appreciate the blend more readily.
Which edition should buyers check?
The current Steam listing uses the title Northgard: Definitive Edition. In a report dated 7 December 2025, PC Gamer reported that the edition combines the base game with the Cross of Vidar expansion and the Snake, Dragon, and Horse clan DLC. The report also lists a Valhalla-themed biome, additional biome availability across modes, a reworked shop, and a digital artbook and art gallery. It said those extras would be added free to existing owners.

Those are dated reported details, not proof that every platform has identical contents today. Check the store page for the platform and edition you intend to buy, along with its current price. The Steam page’s review count and positive percentage change over time, and neither that count nor a past sale price establishes what you will pay or receive elsewhere.
How to read the review scores
Brown’s 84/100 is one critic’s score for a Windows 10 PC review conducted on a system with an Intel i5-3570K, 16GB RAM, and GeForce GTX 970. Metacritic’s 81 is an aggregate for PC critic reviews, with the review count and sentiment breakdown recorded above at 2026 access time. Neither score by itself answers whether the game’s deliberate pace or weakly received story suits your preferences; the specific praise and criticism are more useful for that decision.
