It is a remaster rather than a remake: the adventure and its foundations remain recognizable, while features such as sprinting, redesigned leveling and improved third-person play change how it feels to play.
What changed in Oblivion Remastered?
Bethesda describes the remaster as a modern presentation built over the original game’s underlying technology. The original continues to power gameplay and world logic; the changes focus on presentation and selected systems rather than replacing the game’s core. Bethesda Game Studios summed up that approach in its April 22, 2025 launch reflection: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.”
| Area | What is different |
|---|---|
| Visuals and assets | Bethesda says the game uses Unreal Engine 5, with recreated characters, weapons, environmental objects and food. Its overview also cites real-time lighting, more detailed character models, improved lip synchronization and atmospheric effects. |
| Movement and combat | Sprinting is added. Locomotion and character models were redone, and combat animations, sound and visual effects, and hit reactions were updated. |
| Third-person view | The third-person perspective is overhauled and includes a crosshair. |
| Leveling | The leveling system is redesigned, drawing inspiration from both Oblivion and Skyrim. |
| Interface and dialogue | The interface and UX visuals are updated, and new dialogue was recorded, including unique voices for races that previously shared some voice work. |
| Core game and world | The original game’s technology remains beneath the remastered presentation, powering gameplay and world logic. |
These are Bethesda’s descriptions of the changes, not independent measurements of visual quality or performance. Virtuos Executive Producer Alex Mur-phy described the creative approach as: “Oblivion is the heart and soul of the Remaster.”

Is Oblivion Remastered a remake?
No. Bethesda positions it as a remaster: the original’s core and world logic remain foundational, while its presentation and selected gameplay features have been modernized. The practical distinction is that this is still Oblivion’s adventure, not a replacement designed from scratch; expect substantial visual and interface changes alongside specific mechanical updates such as sprinting and redesigned leveling.
