The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered uses Unreal Engine 5 to overhaul its visuals, but Bethesda says the original game still runs underneath, powering gameplay and world logic. The result is more than a graphics refresh: it also revises movement, combat presentation, leveling, the interface, and dialogue without being described as a wholesale replacement of the original game.

What does Unreal Engine 5 change in Oblivion Remastered?

Bethesda says it worked with Virtuos on a remaster in which the original game continues to power gameplay and world logic while Unreal Engine 5 tools enhance visuals and performance. That distinction matters: the official description presents UE5 as the visual and technical layer, not as a replacement for the underlying game systems.

Rebuilt presentation

Bethesda lists newly recreated environments and character models, real-time lighting, atmospheric effects, and improved lip sync. Locomotion and character models were redone, and combat animations were recreated. Combat also received new sound and visual effects, along with hit reactions. These are described features, not independent measurements of image quality or performance.

Changes to play

The remaster adds sprinting and overhauls the third-person perspective with a crosshair. It redesigns leveling with inspiration from both Oblivion and Skyrim, and updates the UI and UX. Bethesda also says dialogue was newly recorded, with races that previously shared voices now sounding distinct. In Bethesda’s feature overview, Virtuos Executive Producer Alex Murphy summarized the project’s relationship to the original: “Oblivion is the heart and soul of the Remaster.”

Is Oblivion Remastered a remake or a remaster?

Bethesda calls it a remaster and describes the original game as continuing to run underneath the new presentation. That makes “remaster” the more accurate label based on the developer’s account: UE5 enhances visuals, while the project also reworks several player-facing features. It is not presented as a complete rebuild in which a new engine replaces the original gameplay and world logic.

For a practical comparison with the 2006 original, consider the changes by category rather than assuming one version is universally better:

Which platforms and editions are available?

Bethesda’s April 22, 2025 launch post named Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, PlayStation 5, and PC at release. Its current game page also lists Nintendo Switch 2, so the launch-platform list should not be mistaken for the full current platform picture. Availability and store offers can vary by platform and region; check the relevant store for current details.

Bethesda describes the Standard Edition as including the digital base game, the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine story expansions, and additional listed DLC. The Deluxe Edition adds quests for unique Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon gear, as well as a digital artbook and soundtrack app. Bethesda also lists a Deluxe Upgrade for owners of the base game. Check your platform’s store to confirm current edition contents and availability.

What to take away before choosing a version

Think of Oblivion Remastered as the original game’s world and logic presented through a substantial visual overhaul, accompanied by specific updates to movement, combat presentation, leveling, interface, and voice work. If you are deciding between it and the original, weigh those changes against your PC or platform, edition contents, and preference for the original experience; the official feature descriptions alone do not establish a universal winner.
