If you mean Sigmar’s Garden, that is the game’s alchemy-themed solitaire minigame; if you mean a Journal of Alchemical Engineering puzzle, you’ll need the specific issue or puzzle title. Here’s how to identify the activity and find the right kind of help without mistaking a community guide for an official solution.
First, identify what you mean by “side quest”
Opus Magnum is Zachtronics’ open-ended puzzle game about building programmable machines to carry out alchemical processes. Its official Steam listing describes the main activity as solving those machine-building puzzles, with optional goals such as making a design simpler, faster, or more compact. It does not identify a formal “side quest” system. Steam’s Opus Magnum listing gives the game’s context and features.

- Sigmar’s Garden: the closest named optional activity in the listing. It is an alchemy-based solitaire minigame, not a confirmed synonym for “side quest.”
- Journal of Alchemical Engineering: a collection of puzzles, including community-submitted content through Steam Workshop. If you are looking for a particular journal solution, identify its issue or puzzle name.
- Main-campaign puzzle: if you are stuck on a standard machine-design level, use that puzzle’s name rather than “side quest” when searching for a walkthrough.
The official listing gives the game’s release date as 7 December 2017. It describes programmable arms, customizable tracks, and other components used to build machines for alchemical processes.
How to find a walkthrough for the exact activity
- Open the Steam Community guide directory: Opus Magnum Community Guides.
- Match the guide title to your activity. The directory includes community guides such as “The Journal Guide,” “A Selection of Journal Solutions – Layout + Instructions,” and “Easy Hints for Sigmar’s Garden.” Check that the guide covers your puzzle or minigame before following its steps.
- Choose the amount of help you want. A hint guide can preserve the challenge; a complete solution may reveal the answer outright. Guide titles and descriptions are player-authored, so treat them as community help, not developer-issued walkthroughs.
- For a journal puzzle, check its issue and requirements. The Journal of Alchemical Engineering has a historical total of 24 issues, according to Zachtronics’ announcement of the final issue. The same announcement reported more than 750 submissions at that time; that is a historical figure, not a current count of available puzzles. Zachtronics’ announcement records those figures.
What a useful machine-puzzle walkthrough should show
For a machine-building puzzle, first compare the puzzle’s required input and output with the proposed design. A walkthrough should explain the machine’s central idea and give enough layout or instruction detail to reproduce it. If you want to solve it yourself, stop at a hint; if you follow a full layout, expect spoilers.

Once a design works, you can decide whether further optimization matters to you. Steam presents three comparison dimensions:
- Cycles: a faster design completes in fewer cycles.
- Footprint: a more compact design uses less area.
- Cost or simplicity: a simpler build may use fewer or less elaborate components.
These goals can pull in different directions, and the game’s open-ended design allows multiple valid machines. A community solution is one possible approach, not necessarily a canonical or optimal one. The guide directory also includes optimization-oriented material such as “How to golf your solution.”
