How NYT Connections works

Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four, each linked by a shared idea. The groups are color-coded Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple; the New York Times describes Yellow as easiest and Purple as trickiest. The puzzle is designed to include words that may seem to fit more than one category, but there is one solution. NYT says its editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary.

The live puzzle releases at midnight in each player’s timezone, so “today” can refer to different dates depending on where a player is. The date in this answer key identifies the archived August 8, 2024 puzzle.

Where to play or access the archive

NYT says Connections is free to play on its web and app platforms. Signing into a NYT account helps retain progress across devices. The full archive, which the Help Center says dates back to June 12, 2023, is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Playing archived puzzles affects some stats but not streaks, and a completed archive puzzle cannot be replayed. Access terms may change; see the NYT Connections Help Center page for current details.
