These are Nintendo’s general downloaded-software troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed NBA 2K25-specific fix.
Try these fixes in order
- Close the game and restart the Switch. Save your progress if possible, then close NBA 2K25. Hold the console’s POWER Button to open Power Options and choose Restart. If the console is unresponsive, Nintendo says to hold the POWER Button for 20 seconds to force it off, then turn it on again. See Nintendo’s software-start troubleshooting.
- Install a system update. Open System Settings > System > System Update and install an update if one is available.
- Update NBA 2K25. Highlight the game on the HOME Menu without opening it, press + or –, then select Software Update > Via the Internet.
- Check for corrupt data. Go to System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software > NBA 2K25 > Check for Corrupt Data. If the console finds a problem, follow its prompts.
- Redownload the game if the crash continues. Use Nintendo’s redownload guidance for installed software. Redownloading is a troubleshooting step, not a promise that the crash will stop.
If NBA 2K25 is installed on a microSD card
If the earlier steps do not help, test whether the microSD card is involved: try another card or download the game to the Switch’s system memory. Nintendo also lists formatting the card as an option, but formatting erases its contents. Treat that as a late step and back up screenshots and videos before proceeding.

If you have the physical game card
A game that crashes after launching is different from a console that cannot read the card or displays “Unable to start software.” Nintendo’s downloaded-software instructions do not cover physical-card read problems; use its separate game-card troubleshooting guidance for those. Buying another copy is not a routine crash fix; consider a replacement only if the card itself is damaged or unreadable.
If the crash still happens
Contact Nintendo if the downloaded-software problem persists. You can also use the 2K NBA 2K25 support page to submit a support ticket. The page recognizes crashes and freezes as possible support issues and links to general troubleshooting, but it does not provide a Switch-specific crash procedure.

When contacting support, include useful details: whether your copy is digital or physical, the exact error message, when the crash occurs, whether other games are affected, and which steps you have already tried.
Playing NBA 2K25 on Switch 2?
Nintendo’s compatibility notices concerned running the Switch version of NBA 2K25 on Switch 2. Nintendo first listed start-up issues under investigation and later said previously identified compatibility issues had been resolved with an update. If you are playing on Switch 2, install the latest game update. Those notices do not establish a general crash problem on the original Nintendo Switch.
