The “66 titles” figure belongs to HotHardware’s April 2, 2025 headline, not to an official Nintendo count. Nintendo’s Direct showed a varied slate of Switch 2 games and upgrades across different release windows; it did not announce 66 launch-day games.
What did Nintendo announce for Switch 2?
Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 Nintendo Direct presented a closer look at Switch 2 and its features alongside upcoming games. The official page highlights new Switch 2 titles, editions of existing games, and third-party releases. It is a useful record of the presentation, but it does not label the event’s contents as an official total of 66 games.

That number comes from Zak Killian’s HotHardware article, “Nintendo Highlighted 66 Titles For The Switch 2, Foreshadowing Massive Game Library,” published the same day. It is the article’s headline framing. The sources cited here do not establish 66 as a count Nintendo certified.
Were all 66 titles launch games?
No. The games discussed in the coverage had different timing labels, and some had no specific date on Nintendo’s page. For example, Nintendo listed Donkey Kong Bananza for July 17 and The Duskbloods for 2026. Those dates alone show why the presentation’s slate should not be read as a launch lineup.

HotHardware organized its contemporary coverage into near-launch, June, later-release, and Nintendo Switch Online GameCube categories. Those groupings describe the article’s reporting at the time, not a current release schedule. For the announcements and timing Nintendo itself highlighted, consult its official Direct page.
What kinds of Switch 2 games were shown?
The lineup was a mix of new games, enhanced editions of existing Switch releases, and third-party titles. The distinction matters: a new Switch 2 game is not the same thing as an upgraded edition or a game also arriving on other platforms.

New Switch 2 games
Nintendo highlighted Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, The Duskbloods, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, Kirby Air Riders, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, and Drag x Drive. Their presence in the presentation does not mean they shared a release date.
Switch 2 Edition games and upgrades
Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition section included Super Mario Party Jamboree, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. These are editions or upgrades of existing games, rather than five unrelated new franchises announced from scratch.

Nintendo’s list identifies featured titles; it should not be mistaken for a promise that every game would be available at launch.

Does Switch 2 play original Nintendo Switch games?
Nintendo said in its January 16, 2025 announcement that Switch 2 would play exclusive Switch 2 games as well as physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. The company also cautioned that some original Switch games might not be supported or fully compatible. Backward compatibility therefore should not be treated as universal.
