The April 2, 2025 Nintendo Switch 2 reveal showed a more capable successor to the Switch, but it also exposed trade-offs buyers would need to weigh: a higher U.S. launch price, a new storage-card requirement, and limits on compatibility. These are six defensible disappointments from the announcement—not a reconstruction of any original list of six.
1. The U.S. launch price raised the cost of entry
Nintendo of America announced a U.S. suggested retail price of $449.99 for Switch 2 and $499.99 for a Mario Kart World bundle on April 2, 2025. Those are announcement-era U.S. prices, not a statement of current street prices or prices elsewhere. For players considering an upgrade, the higher starting cost was an immediate trade-off against the original Switch experience. Nintendo of America’s announcement also described Japan-only configurations at different prices; those configurations had language and account restrictions and should not be treated as equivalent U.S. offers.

2. Game storage requires microSD Express
Switch 2 includes 256 GB of internal storage, but expanding game storage requires a microSD Express card. An ordinary microSD card from an original Switch does not expand Switch 2 game storage: Nintendo says it can only be used to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch. That makes the card format a practical added consideration for owners who already have a library of older memory cards. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance sets out the distinction.
3. The launch lineup left value to individual judgment
Nintendo highlighted Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, third-party releases, and upgraded editions in its launch-era messaging. Its investor material identifies Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour as games that launched alongside the hardware. Whether that selection justified the console’s price depended on a player’s interests; the reveal did not make the value question disappear. Nintendo’s U.S. announcement and its August 2025 investor materials provide the launch context.

4. GameChat’s free access was time-limited
Nintendo announced that GameChat would not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership through March 2026, with membership required afterward. That free period has ended; the announcement alone does not establish the terms in effect today. At reveal, Nintendo described voice chat for up to 12 people, screen sharing by up to four, and video chat with a compatible USB-C camera. The feature’s announced utility therefore came with a subscription transition built in. Nintendo’s launch announcement is the source for those original terms and feature details.
5. Backward compatibility has exceptions
Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2, but some titles are unsupported or not fully compatible. Accessory reuse also has limits: the original Switch dock is incompatible, although some previous controllers can connect wirelessly. So “backwards compatible” is useful shorthand, not a guarantee that every game and accessory carries over unchanged. Check Nintendo’s compatibility page for item-specific details.

6. The reveal left performance comparisons unresolved
Nintendo described improved CPU and GPU performance, more detailed graphics, and faster loading, but those qualitative claims did not answer every comparison buyers might want. The announcement figures included a 7.9-inch, 1080p LCD and 256 GB of storage; they did not provide a comparable independent battery-life test or performance benchmark. That leaves battery expectations and direct performance comparisons unsettled rather than proving a specific shortcoming. Nintendo’s reveal announcement is the basis for the stated display and storage specifications.

Nintendo said Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days after launch. Separately, Nintendo’s FY2026 Q1 investor material reported 5.82 million hardware units on a sell-in basis. These are different periods and measurement bases, so they should not be conflated; neither figure determines whether the reveal’s trade-offs were acceptable to a particular buyer. Nintendo’s release and its investor materials report the respective figures.
