Nintendo’s remedy is to update the console; its notice does not connect the issue to Virtual Game Cards.
What Nintendo says the Switch vulnerability involves
Nintendo’s September 10, 2026 security notice describes a potential information leak caused by a proximity-based remote attack in limited scenarios. The attacker must be able to scan a QR code displayed on the console or television screen.
Nintendo names two scenarios:
- Album’s Send to Smartphone: the QR code displayed while using the feature could be scanned by a third party.
- Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit: the QR code shown while using a kart in the game could be scanned by a third party.
Nintendo says the vulnerability cannot be exploited if a third party cannot scan the displayed QR code. If someone can scan it, Nintendo says unauthorized code could run on the console or information stored on the console could be obtained. This is a conditional risk, not a claim that merely displaying a QR code automatically exposes a console.
Which consoles are affected, and what update should you install?
Nintendo identifies Nintendo Switch systems running software earlier than version 23.0.0 as affected. The company says the issue cannot be exploited to obtain console information on Nintendo Switch 2. For affected Switch systems, Nintendo recommends updating to the latest system version available for the console.

To check manually, open System Settings > System > System Update. Nintendo says most consoles download the latest update automatically while online; the manual check lets you check and install an update directly. See Nintendo’s system update instructions and version history.
The update history lists version 23.0.1, released September 30, 2026. Its stated fix addresses a separate issue introduced in 23.0.0 that could make software take a long time to start, pause, or close. Nintendo’s security notice sets the vulnerability threshold at versions earlier than 23.0.0; it does not identify the 23.0.1 performance fix as the security remedy. Install the latest version available rather than treating 23.0.1’s listed performance fix as the explanation for the QR-code issue.

What to do if you can’t update right away
Nintendo’s interim precautions focus on who can scan the QR code. Until the console is updated, follow the company’s advice:
- During Send to Smartphone, use only your own smart device and keep third parties from scanning the displayed QR code.
- During Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, use only your own kart and keep third parties from scanning the displayed QR code.
These precautions address the two activities Nintendo names; the notice does not describe a general QR-code risk in all Switch use.

Virtual Game Cards are a separate Switch feature
Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card guide describes how digital games and DLC bought through Nintendo eShop can be managed as virtual cards. Eligible cards can be loaded or ejected between up to two linked Switch or Switch 2 consoles associated with an account. Once loaded, a game can be played offline after any required download, and other users on that console can play it.
Family lending is a different use of the feature. Nintendo says eligible cards can be lent to members of a Nintendo Account family group. The consoles must be in proximity and online to lend; Nintendo lists a limit of three cards lent at once, one borrowed game per borrower, and a 14-day loan period. A loan can be returned early or retrieved, and some games are ineligible. Nintendo Australia also notes that certain Nintendo Switch Online membership games cannot be lent in its Virtual Game Cards overview.

Those loading and lending rules govern access to digital purchases. Nintendo’s documentation does not connect them to the September 2026 QR-code security notice, so loading, ejecting, or lending a Virtual Game Card is not the mitigation Nintendo recommends for this vulnerability.
