Reports did not establish a common cause, prove the cancellations were technically random, or give a reliable total. If your console order was canceled, check its retailer notice and contact that retailer; Nintendo’s digital-game preorder rules do not explain retailer console cancellations.
What was reported about Switch 2 preorder cancellations?
In April 2025, as U.S. retailers opened Switch 2 preorder listings, the Associated Press reported high demand, quick sellouts, website errors and delays. Some customers said they received cancellation notices after getting order confirmations. The console launched June 5, 2025. Associated Press coverage provides that launch-period context.

On June 3, 2025, Nintendo Life reported customer accounts of hardware preorder cancellations at Walmart, Target and GameStop shortly before launch. The accounts did not point to a discernible shared reason, and the report described the number affected as unspecified. These were customer reports, not an audited count or confirmation that an automated system canceled orders. Nintendo Life’s U.S. report summarizes them.
On May 29, 2025, Nintendo Life reported that GAME had publicly acknowledged canceling some UK Switch 2 preorders. GAME said it was working to reinstate as many affected preorders as possible, but the report did not state how many orders were canceled or why. That was GAME’s response to its customers, not a general remedy offered by other retailers. Read the report on GAME’s statement.

Were the cancellations actually random?
“Random” describes how an unexpected cancellation may feel to a customer; the available reports do not establish randomness as the cause. They do not identify one explanation shared by Walmart, Target, GameStop and GAME, and they do not provide a reliable aggregate count. Individual customer posts—including references to a “payment error”—are not a representative survey or proof of a retailer-wide cause.
First confirm what kind of preorder was canceled
A retailer’s preorder for the physical Switch 2 console is different from a Nintendo eShop preorder for a digital game or downloadable content. The retailer owns the hardware order and its cancellation status. Nintendo’s published payment rules concern digital purchases through Nintendo eShop; they should not be treated as an explanation for a canceled console order at a retailer.

What to do if a retailer canceled your console preorder
- Read the order page and cancellation email. Look for the reason given, whether the order is fully canceled or still under review, and any instructions or deadline to respond.
- Contact the retailer directly. Ask it to confirm the order status, payment authorization, and shipping or pickup details. If you want the order restored, ask whether reinstatement is available and whether it would preserve the original fulfillment position.
- Check the remedy before making another plan. A replacement order may not have the same place in line, timing or availability. Do not assume a new preorder, launch-day console, compensation or reinstatement is guaranteed; ask the retailer to state what it can offer.
GAME’s reported effort to reinstate some UK orders is one retailer-specific example, not a promise that another retailer will restore a canceled order.

Nintendo says payment for an eShop game preorder is processed no sooner than seven days before release. If payment cannot be processed, the preorder is canceled. Nintendo lists several possible reasons, including insufficient eShop funds; an expired card or reached credit limit; a failed card or PayPal payment; unavailable Game Vouchers or an expired Nintendo Switch Online membership; a deleted or purchase-ineligible Nintendo Account; deleted tax information; a changed age rating that makes the purchaser ineligible; a customer cancellation; or a server error during payment. Check payment, account and eligibility details
- Confirm the payment method is current and has available funds or credit, and check whether PayPal or the card issuer declined the transaction.
- Confirm the Nintendo Account can still make purchases and that required tax information is present.
- Check whether the game’s rating changed and affects the account’s eligibility.
- If you planned to pay with Game Vouchers, confirm vouchers were still available when the charge was processed. Nintendo says a voucher is not reserved for a specific preorder when it is placed; using the available vouchers on other games beforehand can leave none for the preorder charge. Vouchers cannot be redeemed for games exclusive to Switch 2.
Nintendo says that, if the game has not been released, a customer may place a new preorder; after release, the game may be purchased normally. These options apply to Nintendo eShop games, not physical console orders.
