Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller Review: Is It Pro Enough?

The Switch 2 Pro Controller adds programmable grip buttons, GameChat access, and a headset jack. Its comfort impresses, but potentiometer sticks and the upgrade cost deserve consideration.

Verdict: The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is a comfortable, feature-rich upgrade, but it makes the strongest case for people buying a controller now or those who will use its programmable grip buttons and headset jack. If your original Pro Controller still works well, the new features may not justify the cost. Its sticks are potentiometer-based, not Hall effect or TMR, and long-term durability has not been established.

What’s new on the Switch 2 Pro Controller?

Nintendo’s Switch 2 Pro Controller keeps the familiar Pro Controller format and adds several features. Nintendo lists HD Rumble 2, motion controls, built-in amiibo functionality, a capture button, a C button for GameChat, programmable GL and GR buttons, and a 3.5 mm headset jack. The jack accepts a 4-pole stereo plug using the CTIA standard.

The C button opens the GameChat menu. GameChat requires internet access, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and Nintendo says it is not available in every country. Regional access and membership requirements can change, so check Nintendo’s current information for your location.

How it feels to use

In Cameron Faulkner’s hands-on review for The Verge, published June 10, 2025, he found the controller compact and comfortable. He especially liked the GL and GR buttons, which are built into the grips where his middle fingers naturally rest, and said they were easy to press. The 3.5 mm jack was another welcome addition.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch™ 2 Pro Controller
  • HD Rumble 2
  • Motion controls
  • Built-in amiibo functionality*
  • Capture Button
  • C Button for GameChat**

Those are subjective impressions rather than measured ergonomic findings, but they speak to the main appeal: the grip buttons are positioned to be available without changing hand placement, while the headset jack offers a direct wired-audio option through the controller.

Sticks and durability: the main trade-off

The Verge review reports that the sticks use potentiometers rather than Hall effect or TMR technology. The reviewer described them as smooth and quiet, but did not conduct a long-term durability test. There is therefore no evidence here to establish how they will hold up over extended use or whether they will develop drift.

  • Eight RGB zones with four pre-set modes for dynamic lighting combinations
  • Two programmable quick-action back buttons for customizable gameplay
  • Built-in motion controls for immersive gameplay
  • Ergonomic design for extended comfort

If resistance to stick drift is a priority, the absence of Hall effect or TMR sticks is worth considering before buying. The review does not support a conclusion about long-term failure rates either way.

Compatibility, charging, and included features

Nintendo specifies this controller for Nintendo Switch 2 only; it cannot be used with the original Switch. It can pair wirelessly or connect to the dock while the console is docked. Nintendo Support estimates approximately three hours for a full charge. A USB-C charging cable is included.

Should you upgrade?

Buy it if you’re starting fresh or need another controller

For a new Switch 2 setup, this is Nintendo’s official Pro Controller option, with the familiar format plus the added grip buttons and headset jack. The Verge reviewer found it comfortable, and its feature set covers motion controls, amiibo, capture, and GameChat access.

Consider it if you’ll use the new controls or audio jack

The clearest reasons to choose this model are features you will actually use: programmable GL/GR buttons, the C button for GameChat, or wired headset audio through the 3.5 mm jack. If those additions fit how you play, they make the upgrade more compelling.

Keep your original Pro Controller if it still meets your needs

The Verge’s review characterizes the new controller as expensive and considers it a less compelling upgrade for owners whose original Pro Controller is working well. The improvements are specific rather than a wholesale change in feel, so weigh them against your own use rather than treating the new model as an automatic replacement.

Price context

The Verge review, published June 10, 2025, cited an $84.99 launch-period price and an $79.99 original-price reference; the same page displayed a product card at $89. These are dated publication-context figures, not verified current prices. Check a current retailer listing for today’s price and availability.

The verdict

The Switch 2 Pro Controller is “pro enough” if comfort, programmable grip buttons, GameChat access, and a controller-mounted headset jack are features you value. Its limitations matter too: it is Switch 2-only, uses potentiometer sticks, and has no established long-term durability record in the cited review. For owners of a working original Pro Controller, the decision comes down to whether the new controls and audio convenience are worth the current price.
