The standard Nintendo Switch has the same stated battery-life range and TV output, so the OLED model is not a performance or resolution upgrade according to Nintendo’s specifications.

What changes when you play handheld or tabletop?
The OLED screen is larger, not sharper
The OLED model’s built-in screen measures 7.0 inches diagonally, compared with 6.2 inches on the standard Switch. Both screens have a 1280 × 720 resolution. The OLED designation describes the display type; Nintendo’s specifications do not claim a higher resolution or improved game performance.
The stand and speakers favor shared or portable play
The OLED model has a wide adjustable stand, making it easier to prop the console on a surface for tabletop play. Nintendo also describes its audio as enhanced in handheld and tabletop modes. The standard Switch has a replaceable stand and onboard speakers.
#1 Best Overall
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
Are battery life and TV play better on the OLED model?
Nintendo estimates approximately 4.5–9 hours of battery life for both models. The range is the same in Nintendo’s specifications, so the OLED model should not be described as having longer stated battery life.
For television play, both systems output up to 1080p via HDMI. The larger OLED screen is part of the console itself and does not increase the stated TV-mode resolution. Nintendo’s technical specifications list the display and output modes.
Rank #2
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
How much storage do you get, and can you expand it?
The OLED model has 64 GB of internal storage, with some reserved for system use; the standard Switch has 32 GB. Both systems support compatible microSD cards for additional storage. Nintendo says compatible cards are sold separately; check its technical specifications for expansion details.
What is different about the docks and wired networking?
The OLED model’s bundled dock has a built-in wired LAN port. Nintendo says the LAN cable is sold separately. The standard Switch dock needs a USB LAN adapter for wired networking, also sold separately. If you mostly play on a television, this port may be a practical benefit even though the TV output is the same.

- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld

Nintendo’s support FAQ says the original and OLED docks can be used interchangeably. For setup details, consult the current Nintendo Support FAQ and check any system software requirements it specifies.
Do the systems play the same games?
Nintendo says the OLED model is compatible with the full Nintendo Switch game library. Its system comparison page notes that some games may feel different because of the larger screen, and that the OLED model does not cleanly fit all Nintendo Labo design parameters. That caveat matters if you rely on a particular Labo kit or its molded cardboard accessories.
Rank #4
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Which Nintendo Switch should you choose?
- Choose the OLED model if you often play away from a TV and want the larger OLED display, wider adjustable stand, enhanced handheld and tabletop audio, or 64 GB of internal storage.
- The standard Switch may suit you if you mainly play docked and the built-in screen improvements matter less to you. Its stated battery-life range and TV output match the OLED model’s.
- Consider your wired setup if you play online over Ethernet: the OLED dock includes a LAN port, while the standard dock requires a separately sold USB LAN adapter.
Nintendo’s US OLED product page listed an MSRP of $399.99 when checked in 2026; price and availability can change. Check the current Nintendo OLED Model page before buying.
