Was the Nintendo Switch 2 Ever Going to Be Called “Switch Attach”?

The “Switch Attach” rumor came from a reported YouTube survey, not an official Nintendo leak. Nintendo later confirmed the name Nintendo Switch 2 and explained why it chose it.

No reliable evidence showed that Nintendo planned to call its next console “Switch Attach.” The name surfaced as an option in a reported YouTube survey discussed online in March 2024, but that was not an official Nintendo disclosure. Nintendo later confirmed the system’s name: Nintendo Switch 2.

Where did “Switch Attach” come from?

On March 16, 2024, Tom’s Guide reported on a Reddit post about a YouTube survey asking respondents which gaming products they might consider buying. One reported option was “Switch Attach,” prompting speculation that it could be the name of Nintendo’s next console.

That report did not establish the survey’s authenticity or show that Nintendo had supplied the option. It also relayed Reddit users’ claims that YouTube surveys sometimes included made-up product suggestions. “Switch Attach” was therefore an unverified survey reference, not confirmation of a leak from Nintendo or evidence that the company seriously considered the name.

What is the console’s official name?

Nintendo announced the console as Nintendo Switch 2. The company’s official developer interview, published in April 2025, explains the reasoning behind the choice. Kouichi Kawamoto, a Nintendo developer, said: “So, we wanted a name that would communicate simply to potential customers that, if you’re considering buying a Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 is the newest console.”

Another participant, identified by the surname Dohta, described the decision-making process: “We really struggled because there were so many different ideas, but in the end, after lots of back and forth, we all agreed that it should be Nintendo Switch 2 after all.” Nintendo’s interview does not support a claim that “Switch Attach” was one of those ideas.
