Nioh 3 makes its combat faster and more flexible by letting you switch instantly between two distinct styles: grounded Samurai and mobile Ninja. Its open fields also give exploration more room, but their many activities can feel crowded, and reviewers have reported differing PC performance on their own systems. The result is a strong action RPG evolution whose extra freedom may suit newcomers more readily than players seeking the toughest Nioh yet.
What is Nioh 3, and where can you play it?
Nioh 3 is a Team NINJA action RPG published by KOEI TECMO. It launched on February 6, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC via Steam, according to the publisher’s launch announcement. The publisher describes its central combat feature simply: “In Nioh 3, players can enjoy two different fighting styles: Samurai and Ninja.”

You play as Tokugawa Takechiyo in a historical fantasy spanning settings that include Edo Castle, Totomi during the Warring States period, Heian-era Kyoto, and Bakumatsu. Rather than one seamless world, the game uses distinct open fields for exploration across different eras and regions; PC Gamer describes four independent maps.
Does switching between Samurai and Ninja make combat better?
It is the game’s defining idea, and the contrast between the styles gives fights their pace. You can change styles instantly, adapt to an opening, or favor one approach. That freedom expands the options in a fight, though players who prefer a single, deliberate rhythm may find the additional toolkit demanding to manage.
#1 Best Overall
Samurai: measured exchanges and deflection
Samurai stays closer to the grounded combat of earlier Nioh games. Its additions include Arts Proficiency and Deflect, a last-moment defensive technique that rewards timing. This is the more familiar choice for players who want to stay close to an opponent and make each exchange count.
Ninja: movement, aerial attacks, and Ninjutsu
Ninja emphasizes quick movement, aerial actions, and Ninjutsu. Techniques such as Mist and Evade support a more mobile approach, letting you reposition and attack from different angles. In its February 2026 review, TechRadar praised the combat and build variety but judged Ninja Style overtuned on its playthrough. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a universal balance measurement.
Do the open fields make exploration feel more rewarding?
The larger areas are a meaningful change from a more tightly staged progression, giving you room to explore and take on activities at your own pace. But “open field” does not mean one uninterrupted, interconnected world: the environments are distinct regions, and PC Gamer characterizes them as four separate maps.
More space also means more things to notice and do. PC Gamer praised the shift to larger exploration maps but found their activity count could become overwhelming. If you like clearing optional objectives and following discoveries, that density can be a draw; if you prefer a cleaner route from one main objective to the next, it may feel like clutter rather than freedom.

Is the challenge right for newcomers and series veterans?
The combination of flexible style switching and a broad set of combat options can make the game more inviting to players still learning the series. TechRadar’s reviewer felt the game was more lenient than earlier entries, partly because switching styles and other systems provide additional ways through encounters. That judgment reflects the reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee that every fight will feel easy.
For veterans who value the pressure and difficulty of earlier Nioh games, the perceived gentler curve and TechRadar’s concern about Ninja balance are worth weighing. For newcomers, the same flexibility may make experimentation less punishing. Neither review establishes a single difficulty experience for every build or player.
How does the PC version perform?
Reviewers reported different results across their own PC setups, so the available evidence does not support a single performance verdict for all hardware. TechRadar reported inconsistent performance in denser environments on its system. PC Gamer’s reviewer described strong performance on their system while noting that other staff experienced choppier results. Treat those as individual review experiences, not benchmarks or predictions for your PC.
KOEI TECMO lists Windows PC via Steam alongside PS5 in its release announcement. Choose PC if you prefer that platform and are comfortable with performance varying by hardware; PS5 is the other confirmed platform. The cited material does not provide a directly comparable PS5-versus-PC performance test.

What accessibility options and co-op are available?
TechRadar’s review notes controller and key remapping, subtitle size and speaker display options, sound-effect captions, limited color settings, and a sound cue near interactable objects. It also reports support for controller play. These options may help with specific needs, but “limited color settings” means the review does not describe a broad color-accessibility suite.
The game supports online co-op modes including Summon Visitor and Expeditions. Launch material says cross-play is not supported, so do not assume that players on PS5 and Steam can join the same session.

At launch, the publisher described Standard and Digital Deluxe editions, a physical SteelBook Launch Edition, and a PS5 Treasure Box sold through the NIS America Store. The free demo offered solo and online multiplayer for up to three players, character creation, a fight against Jakotsu-baba, and save transfer to the full game. Its completion bonus had a February 15, 2026 deadline and is no longer an active promotion.

As of KOEI TECMO’s August 19, 2026 DLC announcement, Hell Rising, the first DLC, is available for PS5 and PC Steam; Bloody Insurrection, the second, was in development. The announcement does not establish current package or Season Pass contents, so check the live store before purchasing DLC or a bundle.
Verdict: who should play Nioh 3?
Nioh 3 is most compelling if you want fast, adaptable action and enjoy exploring larger areas rather than moving only through a tightly directed sequence of missions. Samurai and Ninja offer meaningfully different rhythms, while the open fields give you more room to set your pace. The trade-offs are activity density, review-reported concerns about a gentler challenge and Ninja balance, and PC performance that reviewers say varied by setup.
For context on its early reception, KOEI TECMO and Team NINJA reported more than one million copies sold worldwide by February 19, 2026, calling it the fastest title in the franchise to reach that threshold. That is a dated publisher-reported milestone, not a current sales total.
