What the upgrade-pack price buys
Nintendo describes a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as a bundle of the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack. If you already own the original game, you can buy the pack separately to access the upgraded edition. The original game may be physical or digital, but the pack does not replace it. Upgrade packs are available for select games, and their contents differ. Nintendo says they may add visual improvements, new features, or game modes. For example, Nintendo lists smoother framerates, faster loading, enhanced resolution and textures, and the Zelda Notes service for Tears of the Kingdom; those features should not be assumed for other games. Some packs are available at no additional charge to active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members who own the corresponding game. What to check before buying
- You need the original game. A physical or digital copy qualifies, but buying the upgrade pack alone does not provide the base game.
- You need a Nintendo Switch 2 to use the new-edition features. The original Switch game remains playable on Nintendo Switch, while the Switch 2 Edition’s features and content are playable only on Switch 2. Nintendo support guidance
- A game software update may also be required. The upgrade pack may not be the only download needed to access the new edition. Nintendo update guidance
- Confirm the price and features for your title and region. Prices and included enhancements vary by game; a new Switch 2 Edition bundle that includes the base game is not the same purchase as an upgrade pack for someone who already owns it.
How to decide whether the upgrade is worth its price
- Look up the current listing for your specific game in your regional Nintendo Store or eShop.
- Check whether you already own the original Switch game. If not, compare the price of a bundle that includes the base game with the separate game-plus-upgrade cost.
- Check whether the exact pack is included with your active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- Read the pack’s feature list and decide whether those particular additions are worth the price to you.
