That detail came from the video’s poster, not from a public Nintendo confirmation: the available reporting did not establish that every early console was locked or explain how the reported behavior worked.
What happened with the early Switch 2 console?
On May 28, 2025, HotHardware reported that a user had posted a short video showing a Switch 2 retail package and console before launch. The video was reportedly taken down soon afterward. HotHardware attributed the update claim to the poster, who wrote: “Nintendo locked the switch 2 it needs update to function so I am waiting for June 5th to unlock it.” HotHardware’s report also cited a separate contact who reportedly confirmed the lock to the account @Wario64 on Bluesky.

That is secondhand reporting about an individual early unit. The report did not include a direct Nintendo statement confirming the lock, and the original video was no longer available in the sources reviewed. It therefore does not establish whether Nintendo deliberately disabled the device, whether an update was the only reason it would not run, or whether the same behavior applied to other retail units.
Was the console actually locked until launch?
The most precise answer is that the video’s poster said an update was needed and that the console would be unlocked on launch day. HotHardware relayed that claim, but the available evidence does not verify it as a Nintendo policy. Nintendo’s official announcement confirms that Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, but does not confirm the reported lock on this particular unit. Nintendo’s launch announcement described the launch and system features, not the early console’s reported behavior.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
So the headline’s “don’t expect to see them running” reflects the claim attached to that early sighting, not a verified rule for every pre-release Switch 2. There is no substantiated troubleshooting procedure or update explanation for that individual console in the reporting.
When did Switch 2 launch, and what is known about the system?
Nintendo says Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. Its product announcement describes a built-in display capable of full 1080p and up to 4K output when connected to a compatible TV or monitor. It also highlights the faster processor, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers with mouse functionality, and GameChat. These are Nintendo’s product descriptions; they are not measurements from the early-unit video. Nintendo said more than 3.5 million consoles were sold in the four days after launch, calling it the fastest-selling Nintendo game system at the time. Nintendo’s announcement provides those dated launch details.

What should Switch owners know about compatibility?
The early-unit report is not a guide to setup or accessories. For owners moving from the original Switch, Nintendo’s support guidance makes two practical distinctions:
- Dock: The original Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2.
- Storage cards: Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards. A standard microSD card can be used to view screenshots and videos captured on the original Switch, but it cannot serve as Switch 2 storage expansion.
Nintendo’s guidance is available in its Switch 2 compatibility information. Nintendo also explains that the rear logo identifies the console generation, and that Joy-Con 2 uses a magnetic connector and is larger than the original Joy-Con in its console identification guide.
