Once Human faced a community allegation that one of its loot-crate cosmetics resembles No Man’s Sky’s Base Teleport Module. Hello Games founder Sean Murray responded with a joke about the rivets on No Man’s Sky’s own model. The reports reviewed do not establish that Once Human copied the asset, and the studio’s announced replacement has not been independently verified as completed.
What Once Human players said looked familiar
Community members compared an exercise-bike-like decorative item in Once Human with No Man’s Sky’s Base Teleport Module. GamesRadar described one Reddit user asking whether a cosmetic that looked “extremely similar” to the module was acceptable as a high-tier lootbox reward; that is one user’s wording, not evidence of a broader consensus. GamesRadar’s December 3, 2025 report covered the allegation and Murray’s response.
The objects serve different purposes in their games: the Once Human item was described as a cosmetic or decorative loot-crate reward, while No Man’s Sky’s module is a buildable object used for base travel. The reported resemblance concerns appearance, not equivalent gameplay function. PCGamesN’s December 3, 2025 coverage also described the studio’s response.
What Sean Murray meant by “Joke’s on them”
On December 2, 2025, Hello Games founder Sean Murray posted: “jokes on them – we forgot to LOD those rivets 😅”. LOD, or level of detail, is a graphics optimization technique that uses less detailed models at greater viewing distances. His quip pointed to the unusually detailed rivets on No Man’s Sky’s own asset; it was not confirmation that Starry Studio copied it. PC Gamer’s December 3, 2025 report also covered the comment.

Starry Studio’s reported response
PCGamesN reported on December 3, 2025 that Starry Studio said, “We will replace the asset in question.” The outlet also reported the studio was conducting a thorough review and would strengthen its internal art and design policies. These were announced actions as reported at the time; the available reporting does not confirm whether the asset was later replaced or the review completed.
What is—and is not—established
- Established in the reporting: players alleged a visual resemblance, the items were described as serving different purposes, Murray joked about the rivets on No Man’s Sky’s model, and Starry Studio announced a replacement and internal review.
- Not established: the asset’s provenance, whether anyone copied or stole it, or any legal finding. The cited coverage does not present independent asset-forensics evidence proving copying.
The distinction matters: a resemblance can prompt scrutiny and a studio response without proving how an asset was made or whether it infringes another work.
