NINJA GAIDEN 4 gives the series a new lead in Yakumo and a creative partnership between Team NINJA and PlatinumGames, while keeping precision, demanding fights, and familiar techniques at its core. The result is a fresh entry, though not every new addition lands for every reviewer. Its adjustable difficulty also means the challenge is not a single fixed setting.
Does NINJA GAIDEN 4 bring new energy to the series?
Yes: its clearest change is pairing a new protagonist with a combat approach shaped by both studios. PlatinumGames and Team NINJA describe the action as a blend of Team NINJA combat and PlatinumGames’ dynamic style. Yakumo’s Bloodbind Ninjutsu and weapon transformations sit alongside legacy techniques such as the Izuna Drop and Flying Swallow, while Ryu Hayabusa returns with a revamped set of familiar tools. The official description says combat rewards precision and strategy.
The setting shifts the series into near-future Tokyo, where an endless rain of miasma follows the resurrection of an ancient enemy. Yakumo, a young ninja prodigy, is the central new character; PlatinumGames’ description ties his destiny to Ryu. This gives the entry a new point of view without removing the returning icon or the techniques longtime players recognize.
How does the combat feel, and how hard is it?
The challenge remains central, but players are not locked into one difficulty. Team NINJA says the game offers difficulty settings and ways to customize the experience. TechRadar reports multiple options, including a Hero mode, and finds the higher-difficulty fights especially satisfying. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a promise that every player will experience the same level of challenge.

TechRadar praises combat that rewards learning combo routes, enemy behavior, and spatial awareness. It also highlights a contrast between Yakumo’s nimble style and Ryu’s more familiar, weightier approach. That distinction gives the two characters different combat identities rather than making the new lead feel like a simple substitute for Ryu.
Yuji Nakao, PlatinumGames producer and director, joked in an Xbox Wire interview: “When PlatinumGames speaks to Team Ninja about this next Ninja Gaiden, we often joke that ‘we’ve made something that really doesn’t feel like a modern game—it’s just too hard.’” The comment captures the developers’ intended demanding feel; it is not an objective difficulty measurement, and the available settings give players room to adjust the experience.

Do the new mechanics work alongside the series’ legacy?
The combination is the game’s main creative proposition: new systems such as Bloodbind Ninjutsu and weapon transformations, familiar high-impact techniques, and two protagonists with contrasting styles. TechRadar sees the distinct character approaches as a strength. PC Gamer likewise praises the combat, but argues that some newer additions feel extraneous and that the game does not fully settle its relationship with its predecessors.
Those reviews point to a real trade-off rather than a unanimous verdict. If you want the series’ demanding action with a new lead and a broader mix of combat ideas, the partnership offers a meaningful change in emphasis. If you prefer a tighter continuation of the older games’ identity, PC Gamer’s criticism is worth weighing alongside the praise.
