Some Nintendo 3DS Models Now Rival the U.S. Switch 2 Price on eBay

Some New Nintendo 3DS XL sales are reaching hundreds of dollars, but completed-sale comparisons show why not every 3DS is worth Switch 2 money.

Some Nintendo 3DS models—especially the New Nintendo 3DS XL—are selling for hundreds of dollars, putting certain used or collectible examples near the U.S. Switch 2’s $499.99 price, effective September 1, 2026. That does not mean every 3DS has reached Switch 2 pricing: the model, condition, included items and whether a listing actually sold all matter.

Which 3DS models are approaching Switch 2 prices?

The clearest examples involve the New Nintendo 3DS XL. Tom’s Hardware reported eBay prices of $200–$350 for New Nintendo 3DS XL units, citing a post dated December 29, 2025; that is a reported snapshot, not a comprehensive survey of sales. Tom’s Hardware’s report provides context, but individual completed sales are more useful for checking what buyers paid.

For example, PriceCharting records a tested working New Nintendo 3DS XL Black sale at $300 on September 9, 2026, and a sale at $309.99 on September 11 for a system with a game and accessories. Those dated transactions demonstrate that some examples sell for substantial sums; they do not establish a typical price or market-wide average. PriceCharting’s New Nintendo 3DS XL Black completed-sale records also show boxed and sealed examples at substantially higher prices. Such collectible listings are not directly comparable to an ordinary used console.

How does that compare with the Switch 2?

Nintendo’s May 2026 investor material says the U.S. Switch 2 price changed from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. That makes a $300 used New Nintendo 3DS XL a significant expense, but it remains below the U.S. Switch 2 price; some complete or collectible 3DS examples can climb much higher. The $499.99 figure is for the United States and should not be applied to other territories. Nintendo’s May 2026 price-revision notice gives the official change and effective date.

Why 3DS prices vary so much

“A 3DS” is not one interchangeable item in the resale market. Compare like with like, especially when a seller’s price looks close to that of a current console.

  • Model and edition: A New Nintendo 3DS XL, a standard model and a limited-edition system are different comparisons. Notebookcheck reported prices ranging from about $200 to nearly $1,000 across standard and limited-edition 3DS models. That is the article’s reported range, not a representative average. Notebookcheck’s report attributes rising prices to dwindling supply and renewed collector interest, but the available evidence does not establish those factors as a proven cause.
  • Condition and functionality: A tested, working console is not equivalent to one with faults, heavy wear or unverified operation.
  • Included items: A charger, stylus, games or other accessories can change what a bundle is worth. Check exactly what is included rather than comparing only the headline price.
  • Box and completeness: Boxed and sealed systems can command substantially more than used consoles. Treat them as collectible categories, not ordinary used-system comparables.
  • Region: Confirm the console’s region when comparing listings; do not assume two listings describe identical versions.
  • Asking price versus sold price: A seller can ask any amount. A completed transaction is evidence that a buyer paid that amount; an active listing is not.

How to judge an eBay price before buying

  1. Identify the exact model and edition. Match the listing to the same system rather than comparing it with the broad “Nintendo 3DS” category.
  2. Check completed sales. Use sold or completed results and compare recent transactions, not just active listings. PriceCharting’s dated records can provide examples, but a few sales do not establish a market average.
  3. Match condition and bundle. Compare working status, wear, charger, stylus, games and other accessories. Separate boxed or sealed collectibles from used systems.
  4. Inspect the listing details. Look for clear photos and an explicit account of functionality and included items. If those details are missing, the price is harder to evaluate against a completed sale.
  5. Compare the total you would pay. Account for any shipping or other charges shown by the marketplace before deciding whether a listing is comparable to the sold prices you found.

What the price reports do—and do not—show

Reporting and recorded sales support a rise in prices for selected models and examples, particularly the New Nintendo 3DS XL. They do not show that every system in the 3DS family has appreciated uniformly, nor do they establish one cause for the increase. Use the figures as evidence about particular models and transactions, not as a guaranteed resale value for any console you own.
