Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound Review: Fast, Focused 2D Action

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is a brisk, satisfying 2D action game whose combat is a stronger draw than campaign length or replay value.

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is a side-scrolling action-platformer that gets its strongest ideas across through movement and combat. Its quick pace and well-shaped encounters make it an appealing revival of the series’ 2D roots, though a relatively short story and limited reasons to revisit levels keep it from feeling like a long-term commitment. It’s a good fit for players who want tightly focused action more than a sprawling campaign.

What kind of Ninja Gaiden game is Ragebound?

Developed by The Game Kitchen and published by Dotemu, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is a side-scrolling game, not a new 3D mainline-style entry. It released on July 31, 2025, for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, according to Dotemu’s press kit.

The story begins while Ryu Hayabusa is away in America and a breach between the human and demon worlds leaves Hayabusa Village under attack. Kenji Mozu, a young ninja trained by Ryu, steps in to defend it. He eventually joins forces with Kumori, an assassin from the rival Black Spider Clan. The publisher’s game description presents their connected stories and Ninja Fusion—the ability to combine their skills for powerful attacks—as central to the adventure.

How do the combat and movement hold up?

The action is the main reason to play. PC Gamer’s Abbie Stone describes the revival as “A fun revival that opts for solid fundamentals over innovation,” praising its fast pace and forward momentum while finding it more accessible than earlier Ninja Gaiden games. GamesRadar+’s Dustin Bailey highlights the combat and movement, including the Guillotine boost, and the way stages invite players to chain attacks and movement. Bailey’s summary: “2D action games that feel as good as this are rare indeed.”

Those observations point to a game whose appeal is execution rather than a radical reinvention of the genre. The two-character premise gives the action its own identity, while the emphasis on keeping momentum up helps encounters feel lively. If you want a side-scroller that rewards staying engaged with enemies and the environment, the combat is the clearest draw.

How difficult is Ragebound, and is it replayable?

The challenge is real, but its sharp edges are softened by generous checkpoints and unlimited retries, according to Bailey’s review. That makes failure less punishing than in some earlier series entries. A hard mode unlocks after completing the game, offering a tougher follow-up for players who want one.

The trade-off is campaign longevity. Bailey describes the story as relatively short and finds limited incentive to revisit levels once new abilities stop arriving. The hard mode adds another reason to return, but players seeking a lengthy campaign or a substantial post-story loop may find the package lean.
