It is a striking update, but the available comparison is not a clean restoration: PC Gamer’s Wes Fenlon says Black moves closer to the original’s enemy pressure without fully recovering its numbers or balance. Its case rests on fast, lethal combat, remastered presentation and a roster that includes Momiji, Ayane and Rachel—not on a proven, across-the-board victory over Sigma.
Is NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black better than Sigma 2?
It depends on what you want from the comparison. If you value the original game’s rougher, more aggressive combat identity, Black appears to be a closer fit than Sigma 2. If you expect a faithful return to the original’s exact enemy density and balance, the available evidence does not support that conclusion.

PC Gamer writer Wes Fenlon characterizes Black as an attempt to combine Sigma’s cleaned-up port with the original’s jagged character. He praises the pace and lethality of combat and the range of weapons, but says Black still falls short of the original’s enemy numbers and aggression. That is one critic’s assessment, not a controlled side-by-side test or a full account of every version difference.
| Version or reference point | What the comparison establishes |
|---|---|
| Ninja Gaiden II | The original Xbox 360 game is the reference for the more aggressive identity discussed by Fenlon; Black does not fully restore its enemy numbers or balance, according to his assessment. |
| Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 | Fenlon describes Sigma as a cleaned-up port and sees Black as a closer blend of that version’s presentation with the original’s rougher character. |
| NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black | A remaster using Unreal Engine 5, with redesigned stages, characters, effects and lighting; its combat comparison with the older versions remains a critical judgment rather than a developer-verified numerical breakdown. |

What makes Black feel different?
Fast, lethal combat—with familiar friction
Fenlon’s review highlights the speed and lethality of fights, along with a broad choice of weapons. It also notes a finicky camera, levels that can feel sparse, irritation from ranged enemies and rough edges inherited from the older design. Those drawbacks matter: the visual rebuild does not, by itself, establish that the underlying encounter design has been reworked throughout.
A substantial visual rebuild
Team NINJA says the remaster uses Unreal Engine 5 and redesigns or remasters stages, characters, effects and lighting. The intended result is an updated presentation of the game’s violence as well as its environments and character visuals. The developer’s feature list also includes blood and dismemberment, with a setting to toggle dismemberment.

Additional playable characters and support
The official feature list names Momiji, Ayane and Rachel as playable characters and includes multiple weapon types. It also offers Hero Play Style, which provides automatic support in difficult moments. That gives players an assisted option without changing the fact that the game is built around high-speed action.

Verdict: a compelling rebuild, not a definitive restoration
Black has a strong pitch for returning players: a modernized presentation, a fast and dangerous combat style, and a closer approach to the original’s aggression than Fenlon believes Sigma offered. But the comparison should stay measured. The available review says Black does not fully recover the original’s enemy pressure, and it points to camera and encounter frustrations that remain. Treat it as a striking new version with its own trade-offs—not an exact substitute for either older release.
