Yes—the New Nintendo 2DS XL plays compatible Nintendo 3DS games, but displays them in 2D. It is a clamshell member of the New Nintendo 3DS hardware family, with the New-model C Stick, ZL/ZR buttons, NFC support and enhanced processing described by Nintendo. Its closest alternative, the New Nintendo 3DS XL, adds face-tracked stereoscopic 3D. Since Nintendo says production of the 3DS family has ended, the 2DS XL is now principally a used or refurbished purchase; condition and what comes in the box matter as much as its feature list.
What the New Nintendo 2DS XL is—and what it plays
Nintendo introduced the clamshell New Nintendo 2DS XL as an option between the Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL. Unlike the original wedge-shaped Nintendo 2DS, it folds shut; unlike the New Nintendo 3DS XL, it has no stereoscopic 3D display. Nintendo UK describes it as playing compatible Nintendo 3DS games in 2D. Nintendo’s New Nintendo 2DS XL product page lists Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS software as compatible categories.
That compatibility is broad, but not unlimited: software from another region is incompatible, and Nintendo DS games that require accessories cannot be played. If you are buying games separately, check that the cartridge’s region matches the console and that the game does not depend on an accessory the system cannot use.
What the New-model hardware adds
Controls and processing
The 2DS XL includes the C Stick and ZL/ZR buttons found on New Nintendo 3DS-family systems. Compatible games can use these controls for additional input. Nintendo says the C Stick responds sensitively to pressure and describes the system’s processing as improved, allowing faster downloads and software loading. Those are manufacturer descriptions; the available official material does not provide benchmark results or quantify how much faster a particular game loads.

NFC and amiibo
NFC is built into the lower screen. Compatible software can read and write amiibo data through it, so no separate NFC reader is needed for that function.
Size, weight and storage
Nintendo UK lists a 4.88-inch screen and a weight of around 260 grams. Storage can be expanded with microSD cards. Nintendo’s European box contents list a 4GB microSDHC card, but a used console may no longer include it.

The practical choice is straightforward: choose the 2DS XL if you want the New-model controls and compatible 3DS library but do not need stereoscopic 3D. Choose the New 3DS XL if 3D is a feature you want. Both are discontinued, so the comparison between particular listings comes down to their condition, included accessories and asking price; current stock and prices are not established here.
What to check before buying one used
Nintendo says manufacture of the Nintendo 3DS family has ended. Its listed European package included the system, model stylus, 4GB microSDHC card, six AR cards, operations manual and AC adapter; Nintendo notes the stylus and card are stored inside the system when boxed. Used listings can differ, so verify the contents of the specific offer rather than assuming it includes the original bundle.

Is the New Nintendo 2DS XL still worth buying?
It remains a relevant option if your priority is playing compatible 3DS games on a folding handheld and you are content with a 2D display. Its New-model controls, NFC and microSD expansion make it more than simply a 2D version of an older 3DS design. But whether a particular used console is worthwhile depends on its condition, completeness and price—there is no current price or live-availability figure established here.

Nintendo UK announced the New Nintendo 2DS XL for European release on 28 July 2017, describing it as a new choice between Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL. The date and the launch colors—Black + Turquoise and White + Orange—describe that European launch, not present-day availability. Nintendo’s 2017 launch announcement also described the system’s large screen and 2D-only visuals.
