The reported patent concerns the “Island Newspaper,” a recap feature associated with Animal Crossing: New Horizons—not a confirmed new Switch 2 game. Reports describe it as a Nintendo Switch Online mobile-app feature that recaps island activity, but Nintendo has not announced a separate new Animal Crossing title on the basis of this filing.
What is the reported Animal Crossing patent feature?
Coverage describes the feature as the Island Newspaper, a recap of activity on a player’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons island delivered through the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app. Examples cited in reports include seasonal events, which bugs and fish are available, and turnip prices. NintendoSoup’s February 3, 2025 report and GoNintendo’s February 2, 2025 report connect the filing to the existing game’s feature.

The reports say Nintendo filed an application in 2024 and that the paperwork was published. The precise patent record, jurisdiction and current legal status have not been verified against an official patent source, so the filing should be described as reported coverage rather than as a confirmed, fully identified patent.
Does this mean a new Animal Crossing game is coming to Switch 2?
No. The possibility that a similar recap mechanic could appear in a future game is speculation prompted by the reports; it is not an announcement from Nintendo. A patent filing by itself does not establish that a game is in development or that the described feature will be released.

Nintendo’s confirmed Switch 2 release is Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, not a separately announced new Animal Crossing game. Nintendo’s UK product listing gives its release date as January 15, 2026. Nintendo UK’s listing describes physical and virtual versions and an upgrade pack for owners of the original Switch game.
What does the confirmed Switch 2 Edition add?
Nintendo announced higher resolution, mouse controls with Joy-Con 2 for tasks such as interior decorating, Custom Designs and handwritten bulletin-board messages, and an in-game megaphone that uses the console microphone. CameraPlay is also supported with a compatible USB camera, sold separately. Online sessions can include up to 12 players when everyone is playing the Switch 2 Edition. These are features of the announced edition; they do not validate claims about a future standalone game. Nintendo of America’s announcement has the feature details.

What comes in the free update?
Nintendo also announced a free update for both versions of New Horizons. Its additions include a resort hotel run by Kapp’n’s family, a Reset Service, expanded home storage, and Nintendo and LEGO collaborations. Slumber Island is available to Nintendo Switch Online members; players can design and save up to three islands there and play online with friends. The update’s features are separate from the reported Island Newspaper patent. Nintendo’s announcement outlines the update.

|---|---|
| The Island Newspaper is associated with New Horizons and recaps island activity through the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app. | Described in reports by NintendoSoup and GoNintendo. |
| The patent proves a new Switch 2 Animal Crossing game is being made. | Not established. A future-game connection is speculation in the reporting. |

| The Switch 2 Edition and free update have announced features. | Confirmed by Nintendo of America. |
A separate Nintendo game-processing patent record that mentions Animal Crossing: New Horizons is not the Island Newspaper filing. The records should not be conflated. The separate record on Google Patents is not evidence that the Island Newspaper patent has been officially identified.
Bottom line on the rumor
The Island Newspaper is a reported recap concept tied to New Horizons, and its mention in patent coverage has fueled speculation. Nintendo has confirmed a Switch 2 Edition of New Horizons and a free update, but the reported patent is not confirmation of a new, separate Animal Crossing game.
