Participant-shared materials reported in October 2024 suggested Nintendo’s Switch Online Playtest Program involved players working together to develop a planet, using Beacons to purify land and a social hub called the Dev Core. Nintendo publicly described the program only as a test of a new Nintendo Switch Online feature—not as an announced retail game. Both the 2024 test and its 2025 follow-up have ended.
What the leaked materials described
On October 21, 2024, Nintendo Everything reported on images from the program’s official site that had been shared by an X user. As reported, the materials described participants working together to develop a large planet with creativity and resources. New lands, enemies, and resources would appear as players progressed.
Beacons and planet development
The surfaced materials described Beacons as devices that “emit a healing light that purifies and develops the land.” Players would develop areas until a Planetary Block was considered fully developed. These are descriptions from participant-facing program materials reported at the time, not verified specifications for a released game. Nintendo Everything’s October 21, 2024 report said plans beyond the test were unclear.
The Dev Core
The reported materials also described a Dev Core, a social hub where participants could gather, level up, and obtain items. Together, these details suggest a collaborative world-development experience, but Nintendo’s public description did not identify a game, franchise, or commercial product.

What Nintendo officially said
Nintendo described the program as a test related to a “new feature” for its Nintendo Switch Online service. Selected participants were required to download exclusive software to a Switch. That public framing confirms a service-feature test, but does not establish that the leaked concept was a planned retail game. Nintendo’s official Playtest Program support page is now a region-selection redirect.
Why details appeared despite Nintendo’s request
Nintendo asked participants not to share content from the test software or website. In a notice quoted by Nintendo Life on October 11, 2024, Nintendo wrote: “We request that you do not discuss or disclose content from either the Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program test software or website with others.” Participants were also asked not to share download codes; the report said codes could not be reissued or reused.

Some coverage characterized the participant terms as an NDA, but the legal effect was unclear. It is more accurate to describe this as Nintendo’s confidentiality request or participant terms than to claim that a legally binding NDA was established. Nintendo Life reported the notice and the uncertainty about its legal force.
After the test went live, Nintendo Life reported on October 24, 2024 that screenshots, video, and streams were appearing online, and that copyright takedowns were being issued. That report does not establish the target or legal basis for any particular takedown. Nintendo Life’s coverage documented the public sharing.
