Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. Before launch, Nintendo announced a U.S. suggested retail price of $449.99 for the console, or $499.99 for a bundle with a download code for Mario Kart World. The announcement also detailed a larger 1080p screen, 256 GB of built-in storage, redesigned controllers and social features.

When did Nintendo Switch 2 come out?

Nintendo announced the release date on April 2, 2025, and the console became available on June 5, 2025. Nintendo confirmed availability on launch day. This is a retrospective on that announcement, not a report of an upcoming release. Nintendo’s April 2 announcement and its June 5 launch-day update provide the dates.

What did Switch 2 cost at launch?

Nintendo’s published U.S. suggested retail prices were $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for the bundle with a download code for Mario Kart World. Those are historical launch prices announced in April and confirmed in June 2025; they do not establish current retail prices or availability.

What came in the system package?

Nintendo said the console package included the Switch 2 system, Joy-Con 2 controllers, a Joy-Con 2 Grip and straps, a dock, an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, an AC adapter and a USB-C charging cable. The game code was the bundle distinction, not a listed item in the standard console package. Nintendo’s announcement describes the package and configurations.

What changed in the hardware?

Nintendo’s announcement specified a 7.9-inch built-in LCD screen with 1080p resolution and 256 GB of internal storage, some of which is reserved for system use. Nintendo compared that storage with the original Switch’s 32 GB, describing Switch 2’s capacity as eight times greater. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests. The original Switch screen was listed as 6.2 inches.

  • Controllers: Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically. Their mouse controls can be used in compatible games; the feature is not presented as universal input support.
  • System design: Nintendo described a freely adjustable stand and USB-C ports on both the top and bottom of the system.
  • Communication: The console has a built-in microphone and supports GameChat.

These details and the original-Switch comparison come from Nintendo’s hardware announcement.
