The price is per pack, not for both together. You need the corresponding Nintendo Switch game, though active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access its upgrade pack at no additional charge.
What the $9.99 price covers
Nintendo lists each upgrade pack for $9.99 in its US store, as of October 8, 2026. Buying the Breath of the Wild pack does not include the Tears of the Kingdom pack, or vice versa; they are separate products. Nintendo Support also lists the Tears of the Kingdom pack at $9.99 USD. Which game and pack do you need?

The upgrade pack is not a standalone game and does not replace the base game. If you do not already own the matching Switch game, you must obtain it separately. Nintendo says owners of either a physical or digital version can purchase the corresponding pack. Nintendo’s upgrade-pack guidance explains the eligibility path.
When Expansion Pack membership makes the upgrade free
Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access the corresponding upgrade pack at no additional charge. You still need to own the matching full game, and access depends on keeping the membership active. The no-additional-charge access is not a purchase of the pack that remains available after membership ends. Nintendo Support states this offer for the Tears of the Kingdom pack; Nintendo’s upgrade-pack guidance lists access for Expansion Pack members as well.

What the Switch 2 Editions add
Nintendo lists improved resolution and textures, smoother frame rates, faster load times, and support for Zelda Notes through the Nintendo Switch app. Nintendo’s product pages give these as feature descriptions; they do not provide independent measured performance results or specific frame-rate figures. Both upgrade packs have a listed release date of June 5, 2025.

Nintendo lists Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, and retailers selling digital download codes as purchase routes. For Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo Support says a purchased pack is treated as a virtual game card: the Switch 2 system must have that virtual game card loaded, and the matching Switch game must also be available on the system as a physical game card or virtual game card. The support explanation is specific to Tears of the Kingdom. If you access that pack through an Expansion Pack membership instead, Nintendo says the upgrade pack is not treated as a virtual game card and only active members can play the Switch 2 Edition.
