If you use Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. These checks can help isolate the cause, but no single fix is guaranteed: lag may involve your connection, NAT configuration or conditions affecting a particular session.
Before troubleshooting: confirm the problem is online
Overcooked! 2 supports up to four players in local or online play, according to Team17’s FAQ. Online matchmaking is available for Arcade and Versus; to play the campaign online, invite friends. Try a local session and compare it with online co-op. If local play is smooth but online play lags, that points toward the network or session path; it does not identify a specific fault.

Compare local play with online co-op
Play a short local session, then try online in the same mode if possible. Note whether the delay affects both situations or only online play. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a particular network cause.

Check the PS4’s internet connection and system software
Open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection to review or configure the connection. PlayStation’s PS4 internet connection guidance covers Wi-Fi setup and notes that system software must be up to date to access online features. Confirm the console connects successfully and install any available system update before testing again.

Restart the game and console, then retry
Close Overcooked! 2, restart the PS4 and launch the game again. Retry online play and note whether anything changes. Treat this as a basic troubleshooting check, not a confirmed game-specific cure.

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If the PS4 is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with an Ethernet cable and test the same mode. Keep other session conditions as similar as practical. If wired play improves, investigate the Wi-Fi connection; if not, continue to the next checks. Ethernet is a comparison test, not a guaranteed fix.

Ask about NAT configuration
Team17 Support’s console-specific guidance is to make sure NAT settings are configured correctly. In a later support reply, Team17 advised players to follow its network troubleshooting guidance and ask their ISP about opening NAT. Contact your ISP or router maker for help with your setup; do not assume a particular port-forwarding rule or paid service is required. See Team17’s support portal if you also need help with the game.

Test whether a VPN or other intermediary is involved
If your PS4’s connection uses a VPN through the router or another network intermediary, try a session without it, if practical and safe to do so. Team17 has historically suggested disabling a VPN when troubleshooting connection issues, but that forum guidance is not a verified PS4-specific fix and does not apply to every setup. Change only one thing at a time so you can tell whether the test mattered.

Compare different times and session conditions
Record when lag occurs and whether it appears in every session or only at particular times. If possible, compare with a different host or group and note whether the symptoms change. Team17 Support says lag limited to certain times may relate to network conditions or concurrency at those times; that is a possibility, not a diagnosis of your session. A host change is likewise a test, not a guaranteed solution.

Escalate with useful details
If the problem continues, contact Team17 through its support portal and ask your ISP or router maker about connection and NAT configuration. Include the time and region, whether you use Wi-Fi or Ethernet, whether local play is affected, how often the lag happens and any NAT information you can access. Those details make it easier to distinguish a game-support question from a network-setup issue.

What not to treat as a PS4 fix
Team17’s September 2022 connection-timeout fix applied to the Steam and Epic versions of Overcooked! 2, not the PS4 build. It is not evidence that a PS4 update fixes this multiplayer lag. The available support guidance also does not establish that upgrading an internet plan, changing DNS, buying a router, using a static IP or applying a specific port-forwarding rule will solve the problem.
