In a June 2024 Roblox Developer Forum thread, a player reported that some user-generated hats could cover the view of an entire experience, with stacked accessories making the disruption worse. Roblox staff said the issue was resolved on June 19, 2024, but the public thread does not explain the cause or the fix. It also contains an unverified participant report of possible server crashes.
What players reported
In the Developer Forum thread, user hexdevotion described some UGC hats as large enough to cover the whole skybox in a live experience and said accessories could be stacked to intensify the effect. Another participant wrote that they had encountered someone in a game using what they called the “spongebob skybox.” These are individual player reports, not evidence that Roblox’s global skybox changed or that the problem affected a measured number of players or experiences.
A separate participant relayed a concern that certain UGC items could crash servers, referring to a private Engine Bugs report. The public thread supplies no technical details or independent verification of that claim, so it should be treated as an allegation rather than an established effect of oversized accessories.
What Roblox said—and what remains unknown
On June 18, 2024, Roblox staff account KnightGaladeld said the teams were investigating and that moderation approvals for 3D accessories, clothing, bodies, and heads had been temporarily paused. Creators could still upload items during the pause. On June 19, the staff account confirmed that the issue was resolved.

The thread does not identify the engineering change behind the resolution. It also does not establish that the moderation pause, a particular validation check, or an experience setting was the fix. Roblox’s public reply confirms the reported status at that time, not a root-cause analysis.
Current options for experience creators
Roblox’s current Avatar Settings documentation describes how an experience can handle accessory scale. The options control what happens to equipped accessories in that experience; they are not evidence of how the 2024 incident was resolved.

These controls let creators choose between preserving player-selected appearance and enforcing their own bounds. Which option suits an experience depends on its visual design and how much control it needs over equipped accessories.

Roblox’s current UGC validation documentation says avatar assets uploaded through Studio or created with AvatarCreationService are checked against asset-specific requirements. Checks cover areas including schema, mesh geometry, texture and materials, rigging or skinning, cages, attachments, and security or moderation requirements. When validation fails, Roblox says it provides messages and visualization tools to help troubleshoot.

For rigid accessories, Roblox’s specifications say permitted sizing depends on accessory type and avatar body scale. The documentation recommends checking fit with mannequins and the Accessory Fitting Tool, and specifies that a rigid accessory must use one mesh and stay within a maximum of 4,000 triangles. That is a current asset specification, not a statistic about the 2024 incident or proof of its cause.
Roblox also documents Avatar Setup as a way to process models into rigid or layered accessories. Platform Avatar setup creates the more restrictive setup required for Marketplace validation and moderation.
