Why Switch 2 Dev-Kit Access Is Frustrating Developers—and What Nintendo Has Confirmed

Nintendo’s Switch 2 dev-kit request process is currently closed. Developer accounts range from having kits to waiting without a timeline, but Nintendo has not publicly explained its criteria or plans.

Nintendo’s public Developer Portal is not currently accepting requests for access to the Nintendo Switch 2 development environment. The company has not announced when requests will reopen or explained its criteria for access. Meanwhile, developer accounts reported by gaming media describe a mixed picture: some studios have kits, others are still in discussions or waiting, and some say they have no timing information.

What Nintendo has officially said about Switch 2 dev kits

Nintendo’s Switch 2 development page says: “At this time, we are not accepting requests for access to the development environment for Nintendo Switch 2. We will post another announcement when we are ready to begin accepting requests.” The notice gives no reopening date, selection criteria, or explanation for the pause.

This refers to access to development resources, not the retail Switch 2 console. Nintendo’s Developer Portal provides tools and resources for developing and publishing games, including Unity and native C++ environments. Its registration page describes an application process for original Switch development, but the separate Switch 2 notice says general requests for that platform’s development environment are closed.

Nintendo has described its broader Switch-era support as an improvement to the development environment and support for game developers, including the launch of a dedicated Developer Portal. That corporate statement, published in 2024, does not explain the current Switch 2 request status. Silicon Studio’s July 2025 announcement that it collaborated with Nintendo on Switch 2 development tools and SDK setup shows that a professional development ecosystem exists; it does not establish how kits are allocated or whether general applicants can obtain one.

Why are developers frustrated?

The frustration described in media reports is about the gap between wanting to make Switch 2 versions and not knowing whether or when a studio can access the necessary development resources. In August 2025, Digital Foundry’s John Linneman said developers he had spoken with at Gamescom wanted to make Switch 2 versions but “can’t get the hardware.” He also said some developers told him they had been advised to release on the original Switch and rely on backward compatibility. That is Linneman relaying what developers told him, not a published Nintendo directive.

In a December 2025 Nintendo Life feature, developers described different situations:

  • Manfred Linzner of Shin’en said the studio had kits because it was developing a launch title, while noting it could not reveal details.
  • Sophie Smart of No More Robots said the company was in discussions with Nintendo about securing a kit.
  • An anonymous developer said the team lacked kit access and had no insight into timing, making it difficult to plan.

The feature noted that responses were edited for brevity and clarity. In a 2026 report, Arkaden said developers it contacted in several parts of the world—including some with successful original Switch releases—described kits as “largely unavailable.” One anonymous interviewee said teams had to wait or “hope to be tapped on the shoulder by Nintendo.” These are selected accounts, not a census of developers or a measure of how often access is denied.

Does Nintendo have a public dev-kit allocation policy?

Not in the cited public material. Nintendo’s notice says requests are closed; it does not describe a queue, inventory, application success rate, exceptions, existing partner arrangements, or allocation timeline. Digital Foundry co-host Oliver Mackenzie said he did not understand the strategy, and the report described accounts of “weird exclusions” and “weird inclusions.” Those comments reflect uncertainty and secondhand reports, not verified selection rules.

It is therefore not established that Nintendo is excluding a particular category of studio, that all independent developers are being denied kits, or that the company has directed a broad group of developers to rely on backward compatibility. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: reported experiences vary, while Nintendo has not publicly explained the criteria or reason behind the closed general request process.

Are fewer Switch 2 releases evidence of the kit problem?

Release counts provide context for the early catalog, but they do not show why the totals differ or prove that kit access caused the difference. Arkaden reported these database figures in 2026:

Comparison Reported count Source and qualification
Original Nintendo Switch, 2017 release year 413 games MobyGames, as reported by Arkaden in 2026. The Switch launched in March.
Nintendo Switch 2, release year 85 games MobyGames, as reported by Arkaden in 2026. Switch 2 launched in June, so its release-year window was shorter.
Original Nintendo Switch, first quarter of 2026 197 games Metacritic, as reported by Arkaden in 2026.
Nintendo Switch 2, first quarter of 2026 48 games Metacritic, as reported by Arkaden in 2026.

The first-quarter comparison covers the same calendar duration, but database inclusion rules may differ. These are secondary reports of database counts, not independently audited figures. Neither comparison identifies the cause of the gap.

What developers and players can reasonably expect

For developers, the practical next step is to monitor Nintendo’s Developer Portal for an announcement that requests are being accepted again; the current notice provides no date or alternative route for general access. For players, a game releasing on the original Switch may still run on Switch 2 through backward compatibility, but that does not make it a dedicated Switch 2 version. The reported advice to use compatibility comes from developers’ accounts relayed by Linneman, not an official universal policy.
