No Man’s Sky Worlds Part II is Update 5.50, released in January 2025. It adds purple-class star systems with new planet types—including storm-lashed gas giants and rare, all-ocean waterworlds—while bringing deeper oceans, new aquatic hazards and more varied terrain. The key practical detail: the expanded terrain generation applies to planets in the new purple-class systems; existing planets were not regenerated and bases were not reset.
What is No Man’s Sky Worlds Part II?
Worlds Part II is Hello Games’ Update 5.50, announced on January 29, 2025. It expands the universe by adding purple-class star systems and new planetary generation, rather than replacing the terrain players already explored. The studio said the additions represented “billions of new solar systems and trillions of new planets”; that is Hello Games’ announced scale, not an independently audited count. What are gas giants in No Man’s Sky?
Gas giants are newly added, enormous planets surrounded by collections of moons. Hello Games describes them as having hostile, planet-wide storms and extreme conditions, with gravity that affects their moons. Sean Murray called them “ten times bigger than our biggest planet”—his description of their scale in the game, not a separate measured statistic. Gas giants also have unique terrain-deposit materials and harvestable atmospheric gases, according to the update notes.
The update does not frame these as ordinary planets with a different appearance: the storms and environmental conditions make them hazardous destinations, while their moons provide distinct places to explore. The official notes do not specify a universal route, equipment checklist or landing procedure for every gas giant or moon.

What are waterworlds, and how do I land on one?
Waterworlds are rare planets whose surface is entirely ocean. Their seas extend kilometres deep, and the Update 5.50 notes say specialist aquatic landing technology is required to land on them. The notes do not give a specific technology name or unlock path, so check the in-game technology descriptions and the current official update notes rather than assuming any particular module is sufficient.
Not every deep ocean is a waterworld. Other planets can have very deep seas, and moons in purple-class systems can also feature water. Large resource deposits can appear underwater on planets in all systems, giving divers a reason to explore beyond the new system class.

Did Worlds Part II reset bases or change existing planets?
No. The update’s new terrain settings apply to planets in purple-class systems; existing planets were not regenerated, and bases were not reset by the terrain changes. The new systems let Hello Games add the evolved generation without overwriting established exploration and construction. The official notes explain the terrain and system changes.
In purple-class systems, the evolved terrain algorithm creates more varied mountains, valleys and plains and reduces repeated terrain patterns within a planet. That makes those new worlds the place to look for the update’s expanded terrain variety.

How did the update change oceans and underwater exploration?
More detailed water and movement
Worlds Part II reworked water and underwater presentation. Water surfaces gained reflections of clouds, nebulae and terrain, along with subsurface scattering and richer foam. Underwater rendering adds light scattering, caustics and shafts of light. Water reacts dynamically to rain, creatures, ships, vehicles, Travellers and weapons, producing waves and wakes. Murray said, “Every element of our lighting has been rewritten,” in the announcement.
Greater pressure and deeper dives
Deep-water exploration now brings increased oxygen consumption, more life-support strain and magnified planetary hazards. The Pressure Membrane offsets some harmful effects at depth; it is an in-game technology, not a real-world product. A deeper-water HUD indicator displays depth, while swimming and the Nautilon were updated. Nautilon additions include a floating summoning platform and a Dredging Laser. Seaglass and richer mineral seams also give divers new finds to seek.

More marine life and fishing
The update adds procedural fish and creatures including squid, hermit crabs, manta rays, seahorses and prawns. Especially large creatures can appear in deep oceans. Fishing features and new fishing milestones broaden aquatic play beyond scanning and resource gathering.

Alongside its headline planetary and ocean changes, Update 5.50 added relic worlds and constructable ruins, denser jungles, floating islands, localised weather anomalies and environmental hazards. It also brought an abandoned custom mode, inventory sorting, cooking improvements and mod settings, as well as a new narrative mission involving Atlas, Atlantid and the Autophage.

The follow-up Titan Expedition invited players to explore new worlds and offered rewards including a staff and the Wraith living ship. Its announcement is historical context, not an indication that the expedition or its Twitch Drops campaign is currently active. What is the current update status?
Hello Games’ release log lists Worlds Part II and later 5.51–5.55 patches across PC, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and Xbox Game Pass. Check the official release log for platform rollout and later patch information. Patch 5.55, dated February 12, 2025, included fixes for a Nautilon platform stability issue and trader-ship behavior on a gas-giant moon; those are historical fixes, not evidence that the issues remain unresolved.
