The Nintendo Switch OLED is the best fit for players who spend much of their time playing in handheld or tabletop mode: its larger 7-inch OLED screen is the defining upgrade, backed by a sturdier adjustable stand, more internal storage and a dock with wired LAN. It keeps the same three-mode hybrid format and Nintendo’s published battery estimate is the same as for the standard Switch, so it is an upgrade in viewing and convenience—not a stated performance or battery-life upgrade.
What the Switch OLED changes
The OLED model launched on October 8, 2021. It retains the Switch’s handheld, tabletop and TV modes, while changing several pieces of the hardware. Nintendo’s comparison is with the standard Switch model HAC-001(-01), not every later console or handheld.

Specifications are from Nintendo Support and Nintendo UK’s hardware specifications. Nintendo describes OLED as capable of producing more vivid colors, deeper blacks and crisper contrast than the LCD screen; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent measurement.
Is the 7-inch OLED screen worth it?
The display is the clearest reason to choose this version if you regularly play away from a television. Its 7-inch panel is larger than the standard Switch’s 6.2-inch LCD, and Nintendo specifies a 1280×720 resolution for both the OLED model’s built-in screen and handheld/tabletop play. OLED pixels emit their own light rather than relying on an LCD backlight, as Nintendo explains in its OLED support FAQ.

#1 Best Overall
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
That makes the screen upgrade relevant to the experience of playing on the console itself, not to how games run. Nintendo’s specifications establish a larger OLED display, but do not establish a performance increase, a particular brightness or color-accuracy result, or an improvement to docked TV output. In TV mode, the console’s HDMI output can reach 1920×1080 at 60 fps; that is distinct from the built-in screen’s 1280×720 resolution.
What else is better for portable and tabletop play?
A wider adjustable stand
The OLED model has a wide adjustable stand intended for tabletop play. Compared with the standard Switch’s replaceable stand, it offers more flexibility for supporting the console at different viewing angles. This is useful when the console is set on a table and detached Joy-Con controllers are used, though it does not change the handheld controls or the three play modes.
Rank #2
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
More storage, with room to expand
Internal storage doubles from 32 GB on the standard Switch to 64 GB on the OLED model. Some of that capacity is reserved for system use, so the full amount is not available for games and other content. Compatible microSD cards, sold separately, can expand storage on either model; this is most relevant if you download games rather than relying mainly on game cards.
Wired LAN in the dock
The OLED dock includes a built-in wired LAN port. Nintendo says the LAN cable is sold separately. The standard Switch comparison model needs a USB LAN adapter and cable for a wired connection, so the OLED dock makes wired networking simpler for docked play without changing the console’s handheld connectivity.
Rank #3
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Enhanced audio, without a measured comparison
Nintendo lists enhanced onboard audio for handheld and tabletop modes. The available specifications do not quantify how it sounds or establish how much better it is than the standard model’s speakers, so treat this as a documented feature rather than a measured quality verdict.
Does the Switch OLED have better battery life?
No improvement is established by Nintendo’s published comparison: it gives both the OLED and standard Switch an approximate battery-life range of 4.5–9 hours. Nintendo states that runtime depends on the game. Its UK specifications give approximately 5.5 hours while playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as an example; these are manufacturer estimates, not a measured result for every game or use pattern.
Will your Switch games and Joy-Con controllers work?
Nintendo’s store listing says the OLED model supports Nintendo Switch software and all Joy-Con controllers. It is therefore an iteration of the Switch hardware rather than a separate software library. Check the compatibility details for any unusual accessory or game-specific feature you rely on, but the standard Switch library and Joy-Con support carry over according to Nintendo’s store page.

For a US price reference, Nintendo of America displayed a $399.99 MSRP on its product page when accessed October 8, 2026. That is the manufacturer’s suggested price, not a guaranteed retailer price or a verified offer. Nintendo announced a $349.99 US suggested retail price at launch in 2021, a historical figure that should not be mistaken for current pricing. Retail prices and availability vary. Best Value
- Glossy white dock with Hylian illustrations
- Hardware with designs from the game
- 7-inch OLED screen. Enjoy vivid colors and crisp contrast with a screen that makes colors pop
- Freely angle the system’s wide, adjustable stand for comfortable viewing in Tabletop mode
- Use the dock’s LAN port when playing in TV mode for a wired internet connection (LAN cable sold separately)
The price decision depends mainly on where you play. If handheld or tabletop sessions are a large part of your use, the bigger OLED display and improved stand are the upgrades most likely to matter. If you mostly play docked, the screen is less central; the extra storage and built-in LAN port may still be useful, but Nintendo’s published figures do not support paying more for better battery life. For a current owner of the standard Switch, the OLED model is best understood as a screen-and-convenience refresh rather than a reason to expect different game performance.
