PS Vita 2 Rumors: Has Sony Learned Nothing From the Steam Deck?

Sony’s comments about PlayStation beyond the living room have fueled handheld speculation, but no PS Vita 2 is confirmed. The Steam Deck offers a useful comparison—not a verdict on Sony’s plans.

Has Sony confirmed a PS Vita 2? No. As of October 8, 2026, Sony has not announced a Vita successor or confirmed a standalone PlayStation handheld in the sources available. Sony executives have talked about PlayStation experiences beyond the living room, but that is not a product announcement. Reports of a portable PlayStation remain unconfirmed, and “PS Vita 2” is a rumor label, not an established product name.

The Steam Deck comparison is still useful—but not as proof that Sony is repeating a mistake. It highlights what a hypothetical Sony handheld would need to get right: a compelling game library, a sustainable software business, credible portability, and a reason to exist alongside PlayStation Portal and handheld PCs.

What has Sony actually confirmed?

Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Hideaki Nishino has discussed using technology in different forms and locations to create new console experiences. TechRadar reported those comments from a Famitsu interview and described a handheld interpretation as speculation. A separate report on Sony’s Game & Network Services segment discussion summarized the company’s goal as broadening use cases and delivering a seamless experience beyond the living room. Neither report confirms development of a Vita successor.

In TechRadar’s account, Nishino said: “In the future, I think we can create something interesting by utilizing technologies that can be used in various forms and locations to develop new game console experiences.” Read TechRadar’s report. That is a reported quotation from an interview, not an announcement of a handheld.

What do the PS Vita 2 rumors claim?

In February 2024, Push Square relayed a claim from hardware leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead that Sony was exploring a handheld at an early design stage, with no launch approval reported. The report discussed a custom AMD APU and possible native PS4 digital-game support. It described PS5 play as dependent on developer updates rather than a guaranteed compatibility feature. These details are attributed leak claims, not specifications Sony has confirmed. Read Push Square’s coverage.

Ars Technica later covered reporting about a portable PS5 project, placing it in the broader context of portable console and gaming-PC designs. That coverage also does not establish a confirmed product. Read Ars Technica’s report.

There is no confirmed Sony handheld release date, price, screen, chip, performance target, or compatibility policy in these reports. Treat claims about those details as unverified unless Sony announces them. The name “Vita 2” is shorthand used in discussion, not a confirmed Sony name.

How would a native PlayStation handheld differ from Portal and Steam Deck?

The comparison starts with what the existing devices actually do. Sony describes PlayStation Portal as a remote player for PS5: it streams play from a PS5 rather than serving as a standalone native-play successor. Valve’s Steam Deck OLED is a handheld gaming PC in the Steam ecosystem. A hypothetical Sony handheld that runs games locally would be a different category from Portal, and its library and operating model are unknown.

What Sony would need to learn from the Steam Deck

A handheld needs a library, not just recognizable hardware

Steam Deck’s appeal is tied to access to games in Steam’s PC ecosystem. Sony would need to make clear what its own device could play: a broad existing PlayStation library, selected games adapted for handheld use, or a dedicated stream of new releases. None of those options is confirmed. Even a technically capable device would be difficult to justify without a dependable reason for players to buy and keep using it.

The software economics matter as much as the hardware

Omdia describes Valve’s handheld strategy as console-like in one important respect: post-sale software revenue through Steam matters to the business model. That is a useful comparison, not proof that Valve and Sony have equivalent economics or that Sony would copy Valve. A dedicated PlayStation handheld would need enough software demand to support the platform after purchase; the available sources do not establish how Sony would do that.

Portability requires trade-offs Sony would have to demonstrate

A local-play handheld has to balance performance, battery life, heat, screen quality, size, and price. Raising performance can make power and cooling harder; prioritizing a smaller or lighter device can constrain other choices. No verified Sony specifications exist here, so these are tests a future product would need to pass—not claims about rumored hardware.

It needs a clear role beside Portal

Portal already provides a handheld way to play PS5 remotely. A native-play device would need to offer a meaningful additional benefit, such as playing without relying on a PS5 connection or enabling games that work away from home. Those are examples of possible distinctions, not confirmed Sony plans. Without a clear role, “portable PlayStation” alone would not explain why players should choose it over Portal or a handheld gaming PC.

Does Sony’s history prove it has learned nothing?

No. The available figures do not support a simple verdict that a new Sony handheld would repeat Vita’s outcome—or that the Steam Deck proves a handheld is automatically a success. Sony’s official historical sales page reports more than 76.4 million PSP hardware units sold cumulatively as of March 31, 2012, and explicitly says it does not disclose PlayStation Vita sales data. A precise lifetime Vita total should not be presented as an official Sony figure. Sony’s corporate sales data.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Omdia estimated global sell-through of 19.3 million dedicated handheld gaming devices in 2023 and projected 29.3 million by 2028. The latter is a forecast, not a reported result, and both figures describe the category—not Sony’s sales or a prediction for a PlayStation device. Omdia also notes that handhelds can support platform retention while emphasizing that economics differ between hardware makers and software ecosystems. Omdia’s 2025 market analysis.

The more useful question is not whether Sony has learned a single lesson from one competitor. It is whether Sony could combine a strong library, clear compatibility, practical battery and performance trade-offs, and a sustainable software ecosystem in a device that adds something Portal does not. Until Sony confirms a product, the answer is unknown.
