A PS4’s electricity use depends on its hardware revision and what it is doing: gameplay, media playback, or Rest Mode can draw very different amounts of power. Sony’s measurements for the PS4 Pro CUH-72XX, for example, range from 49.3 W for DVD playback to 158.2 W for its UHD three-game active-gaming average. Those figures are specific to that model and test condition—not a universal reading for every PS4.

How much power does a PS4 use while gaming?

Sony’s published active-use measurements for the PS4 Pro CUH-72XX show why the game and test condition matter. Its HD active-gaming figures include a three-game average of 146.4 W, 148.3 W for Marvel’s Spider-Man, and 87.7 W for Battlefield 4. For UHD active gaming, Sony lists a three-game average of 158.2 W and 152.8 W for Marvel’s Spider-Man. These are measured results for CUH-72XX; Sony cautions that measured values can differ between products.

The original CUH-1000A had a published maximum power-consumption specification of 250 W. That is a rated ceiling, not the amount it uses during ordinary gameplay. Historical measurements compiled for original PS4 hardware show menu readings around 77–91 W and gameplay readings from about 110 W to 151 W across different games and outlet tests. Those are separate historical tests, not a standardized range for every original PS4.

Sony says the PS4 CUH-2000 series reduced power consumption by 34% compared with the initial CUH-1000 series, and by 28% compared with CUH-1200. The figures describe those specific comparisons; they do not establish a single reduction applicable to every revision or activity.

How much electricity does a PS4 use outside games?

Sony’s CUH-72XX measurements list 53.9 W for the home menu in HD and 56.9 W in UHD. For media, the same model is listed at 49.3 W for DVD playback, 54.1 W for Blu-ray playback, and 54.7 W for streaming media. These are model-specific measured values, not guarantees for other PS4 revisions or content.

How much power does PS4 Rest Mode use?

Rest Mode is not one fixed power state. Sony’s standby table distinguishes the default standby state—described as the default “off” mode—from networked standby configurations. It also notes that standby/rest mode can support optional functions such as charging peripherals, downloading content, internet connectivity, and remote wake. Enabling those functions changes what the console is doing, so compare your setup with the matching mode in Sony’s table rather than assuming every Rest Mode figure is interchangeable.

  • Energy in kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1,000
  • Estimated cost = kWh × your electricity price per kWh

For example, if a console drew a constant 100 W for 20 hours, it would use 2 kWh: 100 × 20 ÷ 1,000. Multiply 2 by your local price per kWh to estimate the cost. This example is arithmetic, not a claim that a PS4 draws 100 W in every state. For a useful household estimate, count gameplay, media, and standby hours separately, and use the matching power figure for each.

A plug-in electricity usage monitor can help measure an individual console’s draw. Sony warns that measured values may differ between products, and a measurement reflects the console and conditions tested—not every game or power state.

Why PS4 power figures differ

  • Revision: PS4 hardware changed over time; identify the CUH model before comparing figures.
  • Activity: Gaming, menu use, disc playback, streaming, default standby, and networked standby are distinct states.
  • Game and output condition: Sony’s CUH-72XX HD and UHD active-use results differ, and individual games can produce different readings.
  • Measurement versus rating: A measured active-use result is not the same as a maximum rated power specification.
  • Time and tariff: Electricity cost depends on how many hours the console spends in each state and on the local price per kWh.
