The Pokémon GO message “Failed to get Friend List. Try again later.” means the game could not retrieve the Friend List at that moment. It does not, by itself, mean your account or friendships were deleted. Niantic Support said it was investigating related social-action problems in 2020, but that historical statement does not confirm a current investigation or explain reports of the error in February 2026.
What the error means—and what it doesn’t
The message points to a failure to load Pokémon GO’s in-game Friend List. Trainers have also reported related trouble with social actions, such as sending Raid invites. Seeing the error alone is not evidence that friends have been removed or that your account has been altered.
Reports in February 2026 describe the friend list not loading intermittently. Community posts cannot establish how many Trainers are affected, the cause, or whether the issue is widespread.
Is Niantic investigating the issue now?
Niantic Support was quoted in a 2023 troubleshooting article as saying on July 25, 2020: “We are investigating technical issues causing problems for some Trainers with social actions such as opening your Friend List and sending invites in Raids. We will provide an update when we have a resolution.” Read the statement as reproduced by the article.

That is a historical statement, not a current status update. No current official statement confirming an investigation, server outage, cause, or fix is established by the available information. Check Pokémon GO’s official support and known-issue channels for current updates rather than assuming the older investigation is still active.
What to try if your Friend List doesn’t load
Retry the game
- Close Pokémon GO and reopen it.
- Open the Friend List again and see whether it loads.
- If it still fails, you can restart your phone and retry. A third-party troubleshooting guide suggests restarting, but does not show that it reliably fixes this particular error. See the guide.
These are low-risk retry steps, not guaranteed remedies. If the issue continues, contact support through the game and describe what happens. Note whether other game features work while the Friend List fails; that detail may help support understand the symptoms, but it does not establish that the cause is server-side.

When to contact support
If reopening the game does not help and the Friend List remains unavailable, use in-game support and check official Pokémon GO support or known-issue channels for any current notice. Include the exact error text, when it began, and whether related social actions such as Raid invites are also affected. The available information does not establish a verified fix or a resolution time.
