Why Pokémon VGC Fans Are Writing Essays About Wolfe Glick’s 2025 EUIC Victory

Wolfe Glick’s 2025 EUIC roster threatened Perish Trap with Scream Tail and Gothitelle, but his reported final selection left both out. The contrast gave fans plenty to analyze.

Wolfe Glick won the Pokémon VGC title at the 2025 Europe International Championships in London, but the roster’s most talked-about idea was not the plan he used to win the final. His six Pokémon threatened a Perish Trap strategy built around Scream Tail and Gothitelle; in the final, he reportedly left both on the bench and won with a different four. That contrast—one team presenting multiple routes to victory—helps explain why fans wanted to unpack the result.

First, this was the 2025 EUIC—not the 2026 tournament

The 2025 Pokémon Europe International Championships ran in London from February 21 to 23 under Regulation Set G. Glick, also known as WolfeyVGC, won the VGC title with a listed event record of 15–2, earning his second International Championship title. VGC History records his tournament result and identifies him as the 2016 World Champion: VGC History. The tournament’s official results and event details are available from Pokémon’s 2025 Europe International Championships page.

The year matters because Glick did not win the 2026 EUIC. That event took place in London on February 13–15, 2026, under Regulation Set F; Glick placed 39th, and Paul Chua won the VGC title. Pokémon’s 2026 Europe International Championships page covers that separate tournament.

Why the roster invited so much analysis

Glick’s six Pokémon were Koraidon, Flutter Mane, Incineroar, Amoonguss, Scream Tail, and Gothitelle. The lineup could advertise a distinctive plan before either player had chosen their four Pokémon: pair Scream Tail’s Perish Song with Gothitelle’s Shadow Tag. Perish Song puts a delayed knockout condition in motion; Shadow Tag can stop opposing Pokémon from switching out, making it harder to escape that countdown.

The combination gives the opponent a problem to solve at team preview, not just after the battle begins. They have to consider whether to bring Pokémon that can manage the trap, while Glick can decide whether that route suits the matchup. The threat itself can shape the opponent’s selection even when the two Pokémon behind it never enter the battle.

The final showed the value of having another route

In the reported final selection, Glick left Scream Tail and Gothitelle out. He instead brought Koraidon, Incineroar, Amoonguss, and Flutter Mane. That choice makes the victory more interesting than a story of one unusual combination carrying him through: the roster presented Perish Trap as a possible win condition, but the final’s four Pokémon pursued a different plan.

How it threatens a win Perish Song starts a delayed knockout condition; Shadow Tag can restrict switching. The four chosen Pokémon form an alternative to relying on the Perish Song and Shadow Tag combination.
What the opponent must account for The possibility of being caught in a countdown without an easy switch-out. A different matchup plan, selected by bringing four from the same six-Pokémon roster.
How the choice is made A potential route signaled by the roster before team selection. Pokémon selected for the final rather than the two-piece trap.

The strategic point is not that Perish Trap was a bluff or that it was irrelevant. Its presence forced opponents to respect a credible option; Glick could then select the four he judged better for the final. A team can gain value from a plan by making the opponent prepare for it, even when that plan is not the one used in a particular battle.

What fan reactions do—and do not—show

Discussion in the tournament’s Reddit thread described the roster as unusual, singled out Koraidon and Perish Trap, and included readers asking how they could try Glick’s team. A fan blog used the phrase “Wolfe con Perish” to describe the strategy’s reputation. Those examples show why the team gave fans concrete interactions and decisions to debate: the trap, the threat at preview, and the final’s different selection.

They do not establish how many essays were written or prove that the reaction was universal. “Entire essays” works as a lively description of the analysis the roster prompted, not as a measured count of every fan post. The event thread and community discussion can be read on Reddit.

The tournament’s scale gives that discussion a substantial competitive backdrop: Angliss and co-authors report 1,257 Masters-division competitors at the 2025 EUIC in their AAMAS 2026 paper, “The Pokémon Video Game Championships: A Game-Theoretic Analysis”. That figure is specifically the paper’s count for the Masters division, not a count of all attendees.

How to revisit the team now

The roster belongs to the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet era. In 2026, Pokémon’s official VGC platform moved to Pokémon Champions, so this team is best treated as material for historical replay or strategic study—not as a current-format recommendation. The change in platform and the later official distribution of a replica of the EUIC Incineroar for Scarlet and Violet save files are noted on Pokémon’s Champions launch announcement.

For a replay in Scarlet or Violet, the useful questions are more durable than simply copying the final four: when does the threat of Perish Song alter the opponent’s selection, what ways do they have to escape or disrupt the trap, and which four Pokémon best answer the actual matchup? Glick’s final showed that understanding the threat and choosing to use it are separate decisions.
