At a glance: Sinnoh remake or Galar adventure?
| What matters | Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl | Sword / Shield |
|---|---|---|
| Setting and story | Sinnoh; reproduces the original Diamond/Pearl story. | Galar; take on the Pokémon League challenge. |
| Exploration | A familiar remake adventure with updated conveniences. | The Wild Area offers freely controlled camera exploration, changing local weather, Pokémon Dens, and encounters that vary with conditions. |
| Signature features | Close-up battle scenes and legendary encounters at Ramanas Park after entering the Hall of Fame. | Dynamax, Max Raid Battles, and Gigantamax Pokémon. |
| Optional extra content | No expansion purchase is identified on the official pages cited here. | Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra are available through the matching Expansion Pass. |
| Edition differences | Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are separate editions; a full exclusives comparison is not established here. | Sword and Shield have different exclusive Pokémon and Gym Leaders. |
The games offer different settings and features, not a simple better-or-worse choice. The official descriptions support these distinctions; they do not establish which game is longer, harder, or more highly reviewed.
Choose Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl for a Sinnoh return
These remakes preserve the original Diamond/Pearl story in Sinnoh while adding conveniences associated with newer Pokémon games. The official game page names Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup as the starter choices, and highlights close-up battle scenes and post-Hall-of-Fame legendary encounters at Ramanas Park. See The Pokémon Company International’s Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl page for its official description.
Pick this pair if the familiar Sinnoh setting and story are the main draw. The supplied official information does not establish a complete comparison of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl exclusives, so check a current edition-specific list if a particular Pokémon is decisive.

- Explore the Grand Underground to dig up items and Pokémon Fossils, build a Secret Base, and more.
- Test your style and rhythm in a Super Contest Show
- A reimagined adventure, now for the Nintendo Switch system
Choose Sword or Shield for Galar and the Wild Area
Sword and Shield center on a journey to challenge the Pokémon League in Galar. Their Wild Area supports freely controlled camera movement, with weather and encounters that vary by location and conditions. Pokémon Dens host Max Raid Battles, while Dynamax is a defining battle feature. The official overview is on The Pokémon Company International’s Sword and Shield page.
Choose this pair if exploring the Wild Area and using Dynamax matter more to you than revisiting Sinnoh. The games also have optional further areas and story content, but that content is not automatically included with every base-game purchase.

Does the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass come with the game?
The Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra require the Expansion Pass that matches your game unless you buy a relevant bundle. The full version of Sword or Shield is required; Pokémon says the game and pass are sold separately or in a bundle. Confirm the edition and included content on the product listing before purchasing. Details are on the official Sword and Shield page.
Which edition should you get: Diamond, Pearl, Sword, or Shield?
For Sword versus Shield, decide based on version-exclusive Pokémon or Gym Leaders if you have a preference. Official examples include Deino and Jangmo-o in Sword, versus Larvitar and Goomy in Shield; Bea and Gordie appear in Sword, while Allister and Melony appear in Shield. The official version-exclusives page lists the cited examples; check its current information for the Pokémon you want. The available official material here does not provide a full edition-by-edition exclusive list for the Sinnoh remakes.

- Nothing brightens a day like a proper Mad Party! Share a spot of tea with these four Pokémon, and throw a party like no other with this collection featuring Pokémon TCG: Shining Fates booster packs and a cool collector’s pin!
If you are buying for someone else, ask which Pokémon or Gym Leader they prefer rather than assuming one edition is universally better. The cited examples establish differences between Sword and Shield, not that trading is the only way to obtain an exclusive.

Pokémon HOME supports Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, Sword, and Shield, but transfers are not unrestricted. A Pokémon can be used in a destination game only if that species appears there, and a moved Pokémon’s current moves may change if those moves are unavailable in the destination. See Pokémon HOME and the May 12, 2022 compatibility announcement.

What should you pay this holiday?
Nintendo of America’s US Pokémon catalogue listed each individual game at a $59.99 regular price when accessed October 8, 2026. That is a US catalogue price, not a guaranteed holiday price or a current retailer offer. Prices, sales, and stock vary by retailer and region, so compare local listings for the exact title and, for Sword or Shield, account for the Expansion Pass if you want the extra areas. Check the Nintendo of America Pokémon catalogue alongside local retailers.
