Pokémon UNITE changed ranked matchmaking in 2024 and 2025, but the available evidence does not show whether those adjustments have fixed match quality across the player base. The developer said it shifted matchmaking toward visible Master Rank ratings, reported narrower average rating gaps in January 2025, and later adjusted rating calculations. Players still describe frustrating matches, but those accounts are anecdotal and often involve AFKs or uneven participation—not just rating differences.
Why ranked matchmaking felt unclear
In December 2024, the Pokémon UNITE team explained that its existing matchmaking system used an internal matchmaking rating (MMR). Inputs included win rate, win/loss streaks and current rank points, but players could not see their MMR. That made it difficult to understand why a particular opponent or teammate had been matched with them.
For Season 24, the team announced that matchmaking would use Master Rank ratings instead. The change made the rating basis more visible, but it did not promise identical skill or match outcomes. The team also warned that narrowing the rating range could lengthen queues: “To match Trainers with opponents closer in rating, we must narrow the matchmaking range. This may increase matchmaking wait times.” Pokémon Forums, “Season 23 – Matchmaking Changes,” December 2024.
What the adjustments changed
Season 24: rating basis and rating gains
The December 2024 announcement also revised how many Master Rank points players gained or lost in different rating bands. At 1200–1399, the announced values changed from +12 for a win and −6 for a loss to +11 and −8. At 1400–1599, they changed from +9/−6 to +9/−9. The team said actual values could vary slightly depending on the opposing team’s rating difference. These changes affected progression as well as the matchmaking system’s visible rating basis.

Series 25: revised calculation and reported rating gaps
In January 2025, the team said its analysis after the earlier changes found that 80% of matches had an average Master Rank rating difference of 25 points or less between teams, and 88% had a difference of 50 points or less. These are developer-reported figures; the post did not include a downloadable dataset or independent audit, so they are not independently verified match-quality measurements.
The same announcement acknowledged that the variable rating calculation in the 1400–1599 band could make it harder for higher-rated players on a team to gain rating as expected. The team said it revised the formula for Series 25 and would keep monitoring matchmaking and seeking player feedback. It also said: “We believe there is still room for improvement in the matchmaking system.” Pokémon Forums, “Ranked Season Series 25 – Matchmaking System Adjustments,” January 2025.

February 2025: a limited search-range trial
February 2025 patch notes described the search process: a host looks for nine other clients within a Master Rating range. If it cannot find them quickly enough, it gradually widens that range up to a limit. The ten players are then split into teams with similar average ratings while keeping premade groups together.
The announced trial narrowed the host’s initial search range and slowed how quickly it expanded. That could produce closer rating matches at the cost of longer waits. It applied only in selected regions where matchmaking had been stable and excluded five-player premade teams; the notes do not establish that the trial became a universal setting. Why players may still report uneven matches
A rating gap is only one part of how a match feels. The official changes and reported figures concern ratings, search ranges and team averages. They do not measure whether every player participates consistently or whether an AFK disrupts a game.
A July 2026 Reddit post illustrates that distinction: one player said ranked matches did not feel like “honest 5v5 games,” pointing to AFKs, perceived differences in skill and uneven participation. That is one player’s account, not a survey or match dataset, and it cannot establish how common the experience is or show that the matchmaking adjustments caused it. What the evidence can—and cannot—show
- Established: The developer announced changes to the rating basis and rating calculations, and described a limited search-range trial.
- Reported, not independently audited: The January 2025 figures for average team rating gaps.
- Not established: Current-season settings as of October 2026, a representative current match-quality rate, or whether the 2025 regional trial is now universal.
- Anecdotal: Recent community complaints indicate that some players remain dissatisfied, but do not measure the scale of the problem.
