Sony’s performance figures are manufacturer claims, not independent test results, so the evidence here does not establish that the Pro has “the best console graphics” overall. It does show what the upgrade is designed to do, which games illustrate its potential, and what to weigh before buying.
Does the PS5 Pro improve graphics?
Yes, in games that have been updated or designed to use its extra capability. The Pro gives developers more room to pursue sharper images, more detailed lighting and reflections, or higher frame rates. How much you see—and which benefits you get together—varies by title and by the mode you select. Sony says Pro features apply only to selected enhanced PS5 games and that the implementation differs from game to game.

Sony announced three headline hardware gains over the then-current PS5: 67% more GPU compute units, memory that is 28% faster, and gameplay rendering that can be up to 45% faster. Those are Sony’s figures, and “up to” describes an enabled maximum rather than a result guaranteed in every game. Sony also says ray-tracing speeds can be double and sometimes triple those of the then-current PS5. These claims explain the design target; they are not independent measurements of image quality or frame-rate performance.
The other major feature is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s machine-learning-based upscaling technology. Upscaling lets a game reconstruct a higher-resolution output from an image rendered at a lower internal resolution. That can free resources for other visual or performance goals, but output resolution is not the same thing as native rendering resolution, and reconstruction quality can vary by game.

#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
What do PS5 Pro graphics modes look like in practice?
Developers can spend the additional headroom differently: for example, on ray tracing at a higher frame rate, or on resolution and detail. Their descriptions are useful examples of intended game-specific results, not independent comparisons.
Insomniac’s Performance Pro mode
Insomniac Core Technology Director Mike Fitzgerald said that Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would get a default Performance Pro mode. He described it as combining the crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features of Fidelity mode with the 60-frames-per-second target of Performance mode. That is Insomniac’s description of these specific games; it should not be taken as a promise that every Pro title combines those settings in the same way. Sony’s developer statements provide the studio’s account.
No Man’s Sky’s PSSR and higher-resolution option
Hello Games founder Sean Murray said PSSR provides “crisp 4K resolution at 60fps” in No Man’s Sky. He also described an 8K, 30-fps option and improvements to lighting, reflections and ambient occlusion. These are Hello Games’ specifications for its implementation, not a general PS5 Pro capability or an independent test result. Murray’s announcement describes the game’s update.
Enhanced games and the newer PSSR
Sony’s November 2024 launch announcement listed more than 50 enhanced games at launch. That is a dated launch count, not the current size of the library. Separately, Sony said in February 2026 that an upgraded PSSR version was rolling out globally and identified Resident Evil Requiem as its first title using it. Support and rollout can change; consult Sony’s February 2026 update for the announcement and check current game and system information for availability. A game being PS5 Pro Enhanced does not by itself tell you which mode it offers or how large the visual difference will be.
Is the PS5 Pro worth upgrading from PS5?
It is most compelling if you play titles with Pro-specific modes and value the particular improvements those modes offer. If you already own a PS5, compare the games you actually play—not a general promise of better graphics. Check each game’s current Pro features and modes, then decide whether its image quality, ray tracing or frame-rate options solve something you notice on your setup.
Use these factors to judge the upgrade:
- Image quality: Look for changes in detail, reconstruction and visual stability in your games.
- Frame rate: Check the target and consistency of the mode you want; a headline frame rate alone does not establish how smoothly a game runs.
- Ray tracing: Determine whether the game actually adds or improves effects such as lighting and reflections in a mode you will use.
- Display: Consider whether your screen supports the resolution, refresh rate or VRR features that matter to you.
- Total cost: Include any separately purchased Disc Drive or compatible storage expansion you need.
- What you already own: Account for your physical games, saves, accessories and existing PS5 setup.
Sony’s launch MSRP was $699.99 USD. That is historical launch pricing, not a current quote; check live pricing, stock, bundles and regional configuration before buying.

Do you need a 4K TV for PS5 Pro?
No. A 4K display is not stated as a prerequisite for using the console. It is relevant if you want to see a game’s 4K output as intended, while features such as high refresh rates and VRR depend on both the game and a compatible display. A “4K” mode also does not necessarily mean the game renders every frame natively at 4K: some titles use upscaling. Check the display specifications and each game’s mode details rather than assuming the console guarantees a particular resolution or frame rate.
Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?
No disc drive is included in the announced package; the PS5 Pro is disc-less. Sony sells its PS5 Disc Drive separately. Sony says that drive supports PS5 and supported PS4 physical discs, as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD playback. If you have a physical library, include the additional drive in the purchase decision and confirm current availability.
What comes with PS5 Pro, and what can you transfer?
The announced package includes a 2 TB SSD, one DualSense controller and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. Sony lists PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore among compatible accessories. Its setup guidance also says an M.2 SSD installed in an original PS5 can be transferred to PS5 Pro. Confirm exact compatibility and current bundles before purchasing an accessory or storage device.
Sony’s launch setup guide gives approximate dimensions of 388 × 89 × 216 mm (width × height × depth) and a weight of about 3.1 kg. It lists two front USB-C ports, two rear USB-A ports, Ethernet and Wi-Fi using IEEE 802.11be. These are official specifications, not evidence of a connectivity-performance advantage over another console. Sony’s PS5 Pro setup guidance covers ports, transfer and compatible disc playback.
Does “the best console graphics yet” hold up?
The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: PS5 Pro is a premium graphics-focused PS5, and Sony’s hardware claims plus developer descriptions show how selected games can use its added headroom. They do not establish an overall graphics ranking against other current consoles or the standard PS5. There is no independent, controlled comparison here across image quality, frame pacing, noise, power use or value. A defensible “best” verdict would need documented comparisons that identify the games, patches, display, settings and capture method.
For buyers, the useful question is not whether one console wins every graphics comparison; it is whether the Pro’s modes improve the games and display setup you care about enough to justify its cost.
