Pokémon Friends is free to start on mobile, but its free version limits play to three puzzles per day. You can pay for more content on mobile, or buy the separate digital Switch edition. The game presents itself as education-oriented, but the educational claim available from its official site is an educator’s endorsement—not evidence of measured learning outcomes.
What you do in Pokémon Friends
Pokémon Friends is a single-player puzzle game for mobile and Nintendo Switch, not a way to order physical Pokémon plush. Nintendo describes a loop in which you solve sets of three randomly selected puzzles, earn yarn, and use it to make virtual Pokémon plush. Town quests award furniture for decorating rooms for those plush. The Pokémon Company describes it as a puzzle game meant to spark a “Eureka!” moment.
The Pokémon Company lists the game’s release date as July 22, 2025. The Switch version is digital-download only and is supported on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, including OLED and Lite models. The mobile version is available for iOS and Android.
Is Pokémon Friends free, and how much can you play?
On iOS and Android, the game is free to start. The Pokémon Company’s official free-version page lists a limit of three puzzles per day, alongside ten puzzle types with approximately 1,200 variations, 30 plush, five yarn types, and 12 furniture items. These are counts of game content, not measures of educational benefit. The official page says DLC adds more puzzles and plush.

Mobile play requires a compatible smart device and persistent internet access; data charges may apply, according to the official free-version page. Apple’s US App Store listing labels the app “Free · In-App Purchases.”

Mobile and Switch access compared
| Option | Access and content | Price information |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile free version | Three puzzles per day; the official page lists 10 puzzle types with approximately 1,200 variations, 30 plush, five yarn types, and 12 furniture items. | Free to start on iOS and Android; the US App Store listing labels the app “Free · In-App Purchases.” |
| Mobile paid content | Optional Basic Pack and other DLC provide access to additional content; the official page says DLC adds puzzles and plush. | US App Store prices accessed for this article: Basic Pack $9.99; Combo Bundle $33.99; Puzzle On! Bundle $25.99; Puzzle On! Pack #1 and Pack #2 $14.99 each. Store prices can change and differ by region. |
| Switch digital edition | A separate purchase for compatible Nintendo Switch systems. The official page says it includes the no-cost mobile content and Basic Pack DLC. | The Japanese official site lists the base game at ¥1,400 including tax and the Combo Bundle at ¥4,700 including tax. Those are Japanese prices, not US prices. |
These are different ways to access the game, not directly interchangeable packages. The official pages do not establish one total cost for every play path: mobile remains playable within its daily cap, while paid mobile selections change the available content and the Switch edition is a separate digital purchase. Compare the storefront and package you intend to buy; the US App Store prices and Japanese Switch prices above should not be compared as though they were for the same region or package.
Does Pokémon Friends actually teach anything?
The game has an education-oriented presentation, and Nintendo categorizes it under Training, Puzzle, and Education. The Japanese official site quotes a speaker identified only as Takahama-sensei calling it the definitive “learning game” in which thinking ability develops as you play. That is an endorsement published by the game’s official site; the source does not establish a specific institutional role for the speaker.

The sources reviewed do not provide an independently published study, learning statistic, study design, sample size, or measured effect showing that Pokémon Friends improves thinking ability. It is reasonable to describe it as a puzzle game with an educational endorsement, but the available evidence does not establish how much—or whether—playing produces a learning benefit.

- Try mobile first if you want to sample the puzzles without paying. Expect the three-puzzle daily limit on the free tier and the need for internet access.
- Consider mobile DLC if you want more content while playing on a phone or tablet. Check the current price and included items in your own storefront; the US App Store figures are not universal.
- Choose the Switch edition if you prefer playing on compatible Nintendo hardware and want the package the official page says includes the free mobile content and Basic Pack DLC. It is a digital purchase, not a physical cartridge.
The plush are virtual in-game collectibles. Apple’s US App Store description explicitly says they are not real products.
