Sony says the controllers’ speakers can produce louder sound, while a new AI machine-learning model suppresses background noise in microphone input. The official announcement does not identify this update as version 9.0, so that number is unverified.
What changed in the PS5 DualSense audio update?
Sony described two changes: higher-volume output from the controllers’ built-in speakers and improved microphone input quality. The company says the speaker change is intended to make in-game sounds and voice chat easier to hear. It says the microphone improvement uses an AI machine-learning model to suppress background noise, including sounds from button presses and game audio. Sony’s announcement does not give a percentage improvement or a measured performance result.
Did the update make the DualSense speaker louder?
Sony says it did: “The controller speakers can now produce higher volume sound, allowing you to hear in-game sounds and voice chat audio more clearly.” This is Sony’s stated improvement, not a published independent measurement. You can adjust controller speaker volume from the PS5 Control Center.
Does microphone noise cancellation improve?
Sony says the microphone input quality has been improved with an AI machine-learning model that suppresses background noise from button presses and game audio. The announcement describes the intended noise suppression but does not quantify how much noise is removed.

Does the update apply to DualSense Edge?
Yes. Sony names both the DualSense wireless controller and DualSense Edge wireless controller as receiving the sound-feature improvements. The announcement does not describe different audio features for the two controllers.
When did the update roll out, and is it version 9.0?
Sony first published its announcement on February 6, 2024, when it described the update in a beta context and noted that beta features could change before release. The post was updated on March 13, 2024, to say the system software update was rolling out globally that day. Sony’s cited announcement does not state that the update is version 9.0, so that label should not be treated as confirmed.

Those features are not part of the March announcement about controller speaker and microphone improvements. Sony’s September announcement covers that later update.
