In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, you can hunt Shiny Pokémon through ordinary encounters, Masuda Method breeding, Poké Radar chains, and Grand Underground Hideaways. The best option depends on where your target appears and which methods you have unlocked. Serebii reports a standard rate of 1 in 4,096; boosted odds apply only to specific methods, and none guarantees a shiny on a particular encounter.

What are the shiny odds in BDSP?

Serebii reports a base rate of 1 in 4,096 for a standard encounter in BDSP. Treat that as the chance for an individual eligible encounter, not a counter that guarantees a shiny after 4,096 tries. The Shiny Charm does not improve wild encounter odds, according to Serebii’s BDSP shiny-rate guide.

Method Reported rate or effect What the figure means
Ordinary encounter 1 in 4,096 Serebii’s reported standard BDSP rate; chance per encounter.
Masuda Method breeding 1 in 682.7 without the Shiny Charm; 1 in 512 with it Serebii’s reported breeding rates when the parents come from games set to different languages.
Poké Radar, chain of 40 or higher 1 in 99 per patch Reported by Serebii and Nintendo Life; each eligible shaking patch is a chance, not a guarantee.
Grand Underground bonus 1 in 2,048 during the bonus Serebii reports this rate after collecting 40 Diglett/Dugtrio points; the bonus lasts four minutes.

The rate figures above are reported by Serebii; Nintendo Life also lists the 1-in-99 Radar rate at chain 40 in its Poké Radar guide, dated 2021-12-30. The Pokémon Company’s official Grand Underground guide confirms the Diglett/Dugtrio bonus raises the appearance rate of rare or Shiny Pokémon in Hideaways, but does not publish a numerical shiny rate.

Which shiny hunting method should you choose?

There is no single best method for every Pokémon. First check whether your target is available through the method you plan to use; then consider whether you have unlocked it and whether you prefer steady encounters, breeding, or a chain that can break.

  • Choose ordinary encounters when the target can be found in the wild and you want a straightforward hunt without a special setup.
  • Choose Masuda Method breeding if you can breed the target and have parents from games with different language settings.
  • Choose the Poké Radar if the target can appear in shaking grass and you are willing to build and maintain a chain.
  • Choose Underground Hideaways if the target appears in an accessible Hideaway; collecting Diglett/Dugtrio points first provides a limited bonus.

The cited guides do not establish a complete species-by-method availability chart or comparable hunt times. A higher listed chance alone does not mean a method is available for your target or will take less time overall.

How to hunt with the Poké Radar

The Poké Radar lets you encounter Pokémon in shaking grass and build a chain by continuing to encounter the same species. Nintendo Life says you can catch or defeat the Pokémon to continue, but a chain can break. The guide places the Radar at Ramanas Park after the Sinnoh Pokédex milestone.

You’ll visit many different locations in the Sinnoh region, while striving to become the Champion of the Pokémon League.
  • The original story has been faithfully reproduced, and the sense of scale in the originals’ towns and routes has been carefully preserved. People who played Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl can revisit familiar places and relive familiar scenes once more. • These remakes include easy-to-understand, player-friendly conveniences of the modern Pokémon series, plus up-close-and-personal Pokémon battle scenes.
  1. Unlock the Poké Radar. Complete the Sinnoh Pokédex milestone described in Nintendo Life’s guide, then obtain the Radar at Ramanas Park.
  2. Use the Radar in an area with your target. Look for shaking grass and enter a patch containing the species you want to chain.
  3. Continue the chain. After the encounter, use the Radar again and enter a shaking patch with that same species. You can catch or defeat it; either way, the chain may end.
  4. Check each patch. A chain of 40 or more is reported to give a 1-in-99 shiny chance per patch. That is a chance for each patch, not a promise that the next one will be shiny.

The cited guide does not establish an optimized patch-selection or chain-preservation strategy, so avoid treating any particular chain as safe or guaranteed.

How to hunt Shiny Pokémon in Underground Hideaways

The Grand Underground becomes accessible after you reach Eterna City and receive the Explorer Kit. Its Hideaways contain visible Pokémon, and the species available can change with the Hideaway’s terrain, your game progress, and whether you are playing Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl. Some species are version-exclusive. The Pokémon Company explains these access and Hideaway mechanics in its official Grand Underground guide.

  1. Reach Eterna City and get the Explorer Kit. Use it to enter the Grand Underground.
  2. Check Hideaways for your target. Enter the appropriate terrain and look for the target among the visible Pokémon. Leave and revisit Hideaways as needed; available species depend on terrain, progress, and version.
  3. Build the Diglett/Dugtrio bonus. Collect 40 points from Diglett and Dugtrio in the tunnels. Serebii reports that this activates a four-minute bonus and a shiny rate of 1 in 2,048 in Hideaways. The official guide confirms the bonus increases rare or Shiny Pokémon appearances, but does not state those numbers.
  4. Hunt during the timed bonus. Use the four-minute window to check Hideaways where your target can appear. The bonus improves the reported chance; it does not ensure a shiny encounter.

Secret Base statues can increase the appearance rate of Pokémon matching the prevalent statue type, according to the official guide. That changes which Pokémon are more likely to appear; it is not evidence that statues directly raise shiny odds.

How Masuda Method breeding works

For the reported Masuda Method odds, breed Pokémon whose games use different language settings. Serebii reports a 1-in-682.7 rate without the Shiny Charm and 1-in-512 with it. These figures apply to breeding, not wild encounters; the cited material does not provide a complete egg-hatching workflow.

Are any Pokémon shiny-locked in BDSP?

Serebii reports that the starters and Legendary Pokémon are not shiny-locked, while gift Mew and Jirachi and Mystery Gift Pokémon are locked. Restrictions can depend on the exact encounter, so verify the specific Pokémon and how you receive it before starting a hunt. A general statement about a species may not cover every way that species appears in the games.
