Pokémon Legends: Z-A Free Downloads: What the Feb. 28, 2026 Deadline Meant

The Pokémon Legends: Z-A “free downloads” were two early-purchase gifts, not a free game. Their 2026 claim and redemption windows have closed.

No—the “free downloads” were early-purchase bonuses, not free copies of Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The 2026 offer deadlines have passed: the Ralts claim ended on Feb. 28, and the 100 Poké Ball serial code expired on March 10. Buying the game now does not qualify you for either promotion.

What “free downloads” meant

The Pokémon Company’s early-purchase promotion offered two in-game gifts for people who bought the game: a Ralts holding Gardevoirite and, for qualifying digital purchases, a serial code for 100 Poké Balls. The full game itself was not free. The offer terms and dates are listed on The Pokémon Company’s promotion page.

The promotion named both Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo lists the game’s release date as Oct. 16, 2025, and describes the Switch 2 Edition as offering improved resolution and frame rates. The game is sold as a physical Switch Game Card and digitally; neither edition is a free download. See Nintendo UK’s product page.

The two bonuses had different eligibility rules

Gift Who qualified How it was delivered Deadline
Ralts holding Gardevoirite Owners of a physical or digital copy of either listed edition In-game Mystery Gift, using “Get via Internet” Claim by Feb. 28, 2026
100 Poké Balls People who purchased or redeemed the digital version of either edition by the cutoff, including qualifying download cards or codes bought from shops or online retailers Serial code emailed to the address registered to the Nintendo Account used for the purchase or redemption; redeem in Mystery Gift Purchase or redeem by Feb. 28, 2026; code valid through March 10, 2026

These terms come from The Pokémon Company’s Australia/New Zealand promotion page. Regional offer details can differ, so the table describes that published promotion rather than promising identical terms in every market.

#1 Best Overall
Pokémon Legends: Z-A Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
  • As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.

Why the dates matter now

Both opportunities are over. Feb. 28, 2026 was the last day to claim the Ralts and the last day to make a qualifying digital purchase for the Poké Ball code. The code had a later expiration date—March 10, 2026—but that extra time was only for redeeming a code already issued; it did not extend the purchase window. A game bought after the cutoff does not grant either bonus.

How redemption worked during the promotion

The following steps explain the original claim process; they cannot be used to claim the expired offers now.

Claiming the Ralts via the internet

  1. Start the game and unlock Rewards in Mable’s Research. Nintendo says the Link Play feature generally becomes available after about one to one and a half hours of play.
  2. Open the X menu and choose Link Play, then Mystery Gift.
  3. Choose Get via Internet and follow the on-screen instructions. The promotion required an internet connection and a user profile linked to a Nintendo Account. The game saves automatically after a gift is received.

Redeeming a 100 Poké Ball code

  1. In the game, open the X menu, then choose Link Play and Mystery Gift.
  2. Choose Get with Code/Password and enter the serial code.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts. This method also requires an internet connection.

Nintendo UK’s Mystery Gift instructions give the menu path and feature prerequisites.

What if the Ralts already had Gardevoirite?

Gardevoirite was not exclusive to the promotional gift; it could also be obtained through regular gameplay. If a player already had a Gardevoirite, the promotional Ralts would be delivered without holding one. That detail is stated on The Pokémon Company’s offer page.

Where digital-purchase codes were sent

The Pokémon Company said the 100 Poké Ball serial code would be emailed to the address registered to the Nintendo Account used for purchase or redemption. For Japan-market purchases, Nintendo’s support guidance says a missing code for a standalone digital purchase can be checked in the Nintendo Account usage or purchase record; for the described Switch 2 bundle, users should check account notices, and the code could take up to 24 hours to appear. A child account’s parent may receive the email. These recovery details are Japan-specific, and the redemption deadline has passed. See Nintendo Japan Support.
